Tractor Trailer Accident Closes I-580
A tractor-trailer that overturned on Interstate 580 on August 24 caused a Sig-Alert to be issued and the closure of the highway following a spill of over 20 tons of glass. Fortunately, the driver of the truck was uninjured in the crash.
What Happened
The accident occurred shortly before 3:00 in the afternoon near Grant Line Road, according to a representative of the California Highway Patrol, when the tractor-trailer, traveling east along the highway, experienced brake failure. The driver used a nearby hillside to pull off and stop, which caused the truck to roll over, spilling its contents. The fire department for Alameda County reported that the vehicle was transporting wine bottles that were empty in cases at the time, which broke and spilled across the roadway along with diesel fuel from the vehicle.
Clean Up After the Accident
A dump truck and loader were transported to the accident site by the California Department of Transportation to aid in cleanup, estimated to take several hours. Multiple lanes were closed to help facilitate the cleanup and lessen the danger since the tractor-trailer was considered to be in an unstable position and in danger of rolling onto the highway.
Maintenance Problems in Big Trucks
According to a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration report, brake problems were listed among the top 10 truck accident causes. In fact, 29.4 percent of truck accidents were caused by brake problems such as brake failure, brakes being out of adjustment, or other issues. This not only contributes to truck accidents but also endangers employees who work to transport materials from farms and ranches and also contributes to farm accidents.
Responsibility for Trucking Accidents
Sometimes, a truck driver works as an independent operator and owns the vehicle he or she is driving. In that case, the driver is responsible for proper maintenance. In other instances, a driver is employed by a company responsible for the upkeep of the vehicle and employment of responsible drivers. If someone is involved in a truck accident caused by negligence on the part of the truck driver or company that employs that driver, both can be held financially responsible for the injuries or wrongful death caused by negligence. When this happens, seeking an experienced truck accident lawyer is essential to recover fair compensation.
