Causes of a Traffic Accident Between Two Vehicles
Two-vehicle crashes are common and almost always due to driver error. Even at lower speeds, an accident of this type can cause serious trauma. Some of the causes of a traffic accident involving two vehicles are:
- Rear-end collisions: A rear-end collision is probably the most common type of two-vehicle accident. Although rear-end collisions often happen at intersections, they can occur anywhere. Causes usually involve tailgating but may happen when a lead driver stops or slows suddenly.
- Sideswipes: A sideswipe occurs when a motorist drifts out of their lane, attempts to change lanes without looking for other vehicles, or is making a turn at an intersection.
- Head-on crashes: A head-on crash can occur on city streets, rural roads, or highways. They commonly occur at intersections, when passing on a rural road or when a driver enters a freeway ramp going in the wrong direction.
- Improper backing: A driver who backs out of a driveway or parking place can end up causing a two-vehicle traffic accident.
Driver Negligence Leads to Most Traffic Collisions
Driver negligence is the cause of most traffic collisions. Some of the major causes are:
- Drunk or drugged driving is a major cause of a traffic accident. Drunk drivers are responsible for the majority of head-on collisions and are often involved in other types of accidents.
- Distracted drivers are the number one cause of traffic accidents around the nation. A distracted driver is usually texting or using a cell phone but can also be tuning a radio, talking with passengers, or other activities.
- Speeding causes many serious collisions every year. A speeder can more easily lose control of their vehicle and needs a much longer stopping distance.
- Fatigued driving has become an increasing problem on the nation’s roadways. Those who work multiple jobs, swing shifts and just stay up too late the night before are the problem. Studies show that a fatigued driver is just as dangerous as someone who is intoxicated behind the wheel of a car.
- Running a red light or stop sign is the major cause of intersection accidents.
