Traumatic Gallbladder Rupture
Traumatic Gallbladder Rupture. The gallbladder is one of the most common abdominal organs injured on an annual basis. According to the academic journal BMJ:
- Between 10 and 20 percent of individuals will develop gallstones at some point in their life.
- Many people have gallstones and will never develop symptoms as a result.
- Of those who do have symptoms of gallstones, about one third will show signs of gallbladder inflammation, called cholecystitis.
- About half of people will sustain biliary colic, which will lead to digestive problems.
- The vast majority of gallstones are made out of cholesterol.
Risk factors for gallbladder problems include advanced age, obesity, a diet high in fat, and cholesterol issues. Despite these factors, this is not the only way that people can sustain damage to their gallbladder. Sometimes, the gallbladder can rupture due to trauma, which has nothing to do with diet or gallstones.
A Case Report: Gallbladder Rupture
A case report was recently published describing a gallbladder rupture as a result of an auto accident. An elderly gentleman was driving down the road when he collided with an object head-on. Unfortunately, he was not wearing his seatbelt at the time. His entire body flew out of the seat and hit with the steering wheel and dashboard. When EMS arrived, he was complaining of severe pain resulting from abdominal trauma. Due to the concern for traumatic injuries, he was transported to a nearby hospital. There, he received an abdominal ultrasound which showed concern for an acute abdomen. This means that fluid from his internal organs was leaking into his abdomen. He was taken to an operating room for emergent surgery. There, they found something shocking. His gallbladder had been split open, and bile was leaking into the abdominal space. They removed his gallbladder and drained the fluid from his abdomen. Fortunately, this gentlemen made a full recovery.
