Truckee Crash Data
Without a doubt, Truckee is a great place to live or visit. It sits in one of the most beautiful areas of California, just north of Tahoe Lake. It’s easy for residents to get out and enjoy the amazing sights of the Sierra Nevadas or to enjoy any of the fun activities that the Tahoe area offers. However, just like any other city, Truckee sees its fair share of auto accidents. Crash Overview
According to UC Berkeley, between the years 2006 and 2018, there were 826 car accidents in Truckee. These accidents left 1091 people with injuries and killed 19 more. The 826 crashes mostly involved passenger vehicles, but 30 involved motorcycles, 59 involved bikes, and 49 involved pedestrians. This means that about 16 percent of crashes involved a pedestrian, motorcycle, or bicyclist. Additionally, less than half of these crashes happened on a highway inside of Truckee.
Collision Type and Time
The most common crash types in Truckee were, from most to least accidents:
- Rear-end – 25 percent
- Hit-object – 23 percent
- Broadside – 15 percent
- Rollover – 12 percent
- Sideswipe – 8 percent
- Head-on – 6 percent
- Vehicle/Pedestrian – 5 percent
By far, the most crashes took place between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Accidents spiked sharply during these times. Thursdays and Fridays were especially dangerous. Nighttime accidents mostly only happened on the weekends. Crashes between midnight and 6:00 a.m. were rare.
Violation
Most car accidents happen when a driver fails to follow traffic laws. Violating traffic laws seriously increases the chance of a crash. These were the six most accident-causing violations in Truckee during 2006-2018:
- Speeding
- DUI
- Improper turning
- Right-of-way
- Wrong side of the road
- Tailgating
Less common violations included impeding traffic, falling asleep, improper passing, and more.
What to Do After a Crash
Often, people are shocked when a crash happens. After surviving a crash, it can be hard to remember what to do. For this reason, it is a good idea to keep a list of things to do after an accident in your glove box.
First, you should make sure that nobody is seriously hurt. If injuries have been suffered, call for medical help right away. After this, find a safe area where you aren’t in danger of being hit again. Make sure you are visible to passing vehicles if you are near a roadway.
