Turmeric is a Powerful Health Supplement
Turmeric is a common spice; however, it also provides a number of medicinal benefits. Therefore, it can be taken as a health supplement as well. Recently, this popular spice has been compared to other anti-inflammatory agents including Motrin and hydrocortisone. It has also been compared to chemotherapy agents, used to fight cancer. While these medications have side effects that are well-known, Turmeric has a track record lasting multiple millennia demonstrating its safety. Now, this supplement has been researched by the medical community so that its benefits can be better understood.
Turmeric can Reduce Inflammation
One of the most important benefits of Turmeric is that it can reduce inflammation. Inflammation is the body’s natural reaction to injuries and illnesses. While some degree of inflammation is good, too much of it can cause additional damage at the injury site, leading to chronic pain. This prolongs the recovery process and might lead to long-term complications. Turmeric can prevent this from happening
One of the active ingredients in Turmeric is curcumin, which is a natural anti-inflammatory agent. Curcumin can reduce the body’s signals that promote inflammation. In addition, many people like to mix Turmeric with black pepper. Black pepper contains an ingredient called piperine. Piperine increases the body’s absorption of curcumin, helping to augment the anti-inflammatory effects of Turmeric.
Reducing inflammation throughout the body is important following an injury; however, this can also protect the body’s organs from long-term damage. Prolonged periods of inflammation can damage the body’s blood vessels, obstructing the flow of oxygen and nutrients, leading to long-term complications. Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties can be used to prevent this damage. Therefore, Turmeric has important anti-inflammatory properties that can help both in the short-term and in the future.
Turmeric is an Anti-Oxidant
Another important property of Turmeric is its ability to act as an anti-oxidant. Anti-oxidants are used to bind to free radicals that would otherwise cause damage throughout the body. A free radical is a substance that can bind to the body’s molecular structures, including DNA, leading to mutations. DNA damage can lead to serious diseases, including cancer.
Curcumin, one of the key ingredients in Turmeric, can bind to these free radicals. This has to do with the molecular structure of curcumin. When curcumin binds to free radicals, they are neutralized and no longer have the ability to cause damage throughout the body. For this reason, many people have already taken advantage of Turmeric for its anti-oxidant properties.
Curcumin can Boost Brain Function
Finally, curcumin can also boost the function of the brain. Studies have shown that curcumin can increase the release of a key molecule called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Right now, it isn’t clear exactly how curcumin (the active ingredient in Turmeric) boosts the production of BDNF; however, it likely has to do with the molecular structure of curcumin. Curcumin may mimic the structure of cell signals that bind to receptors, controlling the release of BDNF. By binding to these receptors, curcumin may also trigger the release of BDNF.
BDNF is important for many reasons. Studies have shown that elevated levels of BDNF can reduce the rates of Alzheimer’s Disease, depression, and memory loss. If Turmeric can boost levels of BDNF, it has the ability to protect someone’s neurological function and guard against serious mental health conditions. For this reason, many people have hailed Turmeric as a key health supplement.
