Two Eureka Residents Dead After Collision
I’m Ed Smith, a Eureka personal injury lawyer. Two women from Eureka tragically lost their lives after a serious two-vehicle collision occurred on U.S. Highway 101 in the area of Salmon Creek Road on Friday, April 13, 2018. According to reports, the two vehicles collided head-on, leaving both cars with significant damage. Authorities are reportedly still actively investigating the accident and have not yet been fully able to determine all involved causal factors.
The women were identified by the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office on Monday, April 16, 2018, as two Eureka residents; 20-year-old Emely Selina Carreno-Arenas and 19-year-old Michelle Segundo.
My heartfelt sympathy is with Emely and Michelle’s loved ones as they mourn their painful loss.
Collision Details
California Highway Patrol (CHP) official reports state that the accident occurred on Highway 101 in Southern Humboldt County at approximately 11:44 a.m. According to the report, Carreno-Arenas had been driving south on the highway in her 2007 Honda Civic at an unknown rate of speed with Segundo in the passenger seat.
Carreno-Arenas then, for reasons not currently known, apparently lost control of her vehicle. After Carreno-Arenas lost control, her car crossed over into the highway’s northbound lanes and entered the path of an oncoming 2003 Ford van being driven by a 69-year-old resident of Arizona. The van had reportedly been driving at 65 miles per hour when it collided with the broadside of the Honda, splitting the vehicle in two and scattering wreckage across the highway.
Reports stated that one half of the Honda came to a rest on the highway, while the front half of the vehicle, along with the Ford, traveled off of the eastern edge of the roadway.
Emergency Response
Emergency accident responders reported that both Segundo and Carreno were pronounced dead at the scene of the collision. The driver of the van was reportedly taken by helicopter ambulance to the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital to receive emergency care for what were described as significant injuries.
A Community in Mourning
Carreno-Arenas and Segundo, who had both been local college students, were mourned along with Josiah Lawson, a recently deceased Humboldt State University (HSU) student, during a memorial that took place on Sunday, April 15, 2018. Charmaigne Lawson, the mother of Josiah Lawson, stated that both Segundo and Arenas had been friends of Josiah who had decided they were emotionally unable to attend the previously scheduled remembrance. Additionally, HSU released a statement extending condolences to the family and friends of the deceased that noted that “(the deaths of the two women) are a loss for our community.”
