Two Fatalities Caused By Williams Area Highway Accident
On Sunday, October 6, 2019, a Williams area highway accident left two people with fatal injuries and left another four people with trauma ranging from minor to severe. The two decedents have been identified by Colusa County officials as a 32-year-old and a 29-year-old woman, both residents of Oakland in the Bay Area. However, authorities are waiting to release their names until their families have been notified. According to California Highway Patrol (CHP), this crash involved two separate vehicles and happened just before sunset in a rural location outside of Williams. The crash remains under investigation.
Collision Details
CHP’s Williams office indicated that the wreck happened at around 7:26 p.m. on Highway 20 to the west of Walnut Drive. The two Oakland women had been driving in a 1996 Toyota Camry and were heading west on Highway 20 when the driver apparently lost control of her vehicle. The Toyota turned sideways and traveled into the eastbound side of the highway. As it crossed into oncoming traffic, the Toyota entered the path of a 2009 Ford Expedition. The driver of the Expedition, identified as a 61-year-old Rocklin woman, reportedly did not have time to maneuver away from the Toyota. The Expedition’s front end collided directly into the passenger side of the Toyota.
Injuries
According to medical responders at the scene of the collision, the two occupants of the Toyota suffered critical injuries during the incident. The two women were sadly declared deceased on-scene.
The driver of the Expedition was discovered with what officials called minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Enloe Hospital in Chico for medical attention. All three passengers of the Ford were also injured during the incident. A 23-year-old woman reportedly received major injuries and was taken to the UC Davis Medical Center for treatment. A 17-year-old girl with minor injuries and a 16-year-old girl with moderate injuries were transported to the Kaiser Permanente Hospital in South Sacramento.
Investigation
Highway 20 was reportedly closed to traffic while accident response and preliminary investigation were underway. The highway remained closed for three hours while investigators surveyed the scene for evidence about what may have caused the crash. Crashes like this one are frequently caused by factors that are not under the control of the drivers involved. Often, a collision happens because a vehicle part such as a tire, steering system, or accelerator malfunctions or a hazard in the road forces the driver to make a dangerous maneuver.
