A jet ski accident involving a hit-and-run in Oakdale, northeast of Modesto, caused injuries to two minors on July 27. The crash happened at the Woodward Reservoir on the 26-Mile Road at about 2:30 p.m. close to the Bay View Boat Ramp, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office. Negligent Rider Arrested in Oakdale Jet Ski Accident

The jet ski rider was placed under arrest for suspected felony hit-and-run. Intoxication did not appear to factor into the jet ski collision. The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the injury accident.

Understanding Boating Safety Regulations

When navigating the waterways, it’s crucial to be familiar with local boating safety regulations to avoid an Oakdale jet ski accident. These regulations are designed to ensure the safety of all waterway users—including boaters, swimmers, and wildlife. Key responsibilities include having life jackets for every passenger on board, adhering to speed limits, and maintaining a safe distance from other vessels and swimmers. Additionally, boater education courses are highly recommended, as they provide essential knowledge about navigation rules, emergency procedures, and environmental stewardship.

Liability When a Negligent Jet Skier Injures Minors on the Water

In incidents where an Oakdale jet ski accident causes injury to minors while they are enjoying water activities, they may be held liable for injuries that occur. Typically, the jet skier may be held responsible for their actions if they fail to adhere to safety regulations or operate their watercraft recklessly. This can include speeding in crowded areas, not providing proper warnings, hit-and-run or engaging in stunts that endanger others.

Recovery of Injury Compensation After a Boating Accident

When an Oakdale jet ski accident occurs, injured parties may seek compensation for their injuries and related damages. This process typically begins by determining liability, which involves assessing who was at fault in the accident. Victims can file claims against the at-fault party’s insurance, or if the responsible party is uninsured, they may pursue a personal injury lawsuit. Compensation can cover a range of costs, including the following:

  • Medical expenses  that arise as a result of the boating accident are recoverable
  • Rehabilitation is a common part of recovery from a medical injury, the cost of which is recovered.
  • Lost wages and benefits are recoverable. If the injured person has to take a job that pays less because of their injury, the pay difference is recovered.
  • Pain and suffering compensation recovery includes both physical injuries and emotional and psychological trauma.

Engaging an attorney experienced in boating accidents can significantly enhance the likelihood of a successful recovery.
