Two-Vehicle Accident in Carmichael
A Carmichael two-vehicle accident happened during the early evening hours along Marconi Avenue on March 13 that caused an injury requiring an ambulance. The car accident happened in front of the Carmichael Presbyterian Church shortly after 6:00 p.m. when a Honda Accord and a Smart car collided. According to a police report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the right lane was blocked for a short time by the accident. The extent of the injuries was not reported. The CHP is investigating the crash to determine fault and how it occurred. It is unknown at this time whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the Carmichael two-vehicle accident.
Motor Vehicle Accident Statistics
There are over 6 million car accidents each year in the United States. Annually, 3-million people are injured in motor vehicle accidents. Two-thirds of the injured individuals suffer injuries that are defined as permanent, such as damage to the spinal cord or amputation. Each day, 90 people around the country die due to injuries sustained in a car accident. The National Safety Council reports that the number of deaths exceeded 40,000 in 2017. Although the number of deaths declined slightly from 2016, it still was much higher than that of 2015.
Car Safety
Auto manufacturers have worked hard to improve car safety with the placement of additional airbags and collision avoidance systems. For example, deaths can be reduced by 45 percent if seat belts are worn. Serious injuries are also decreased by half. A person not wearing a seat belt has a 30 times greater risk of being ejected from the vehicle, something that often leads to fatal injuries. Yet, injuries and deaths continue to mount. Part of the problem is that nationwide, one out of every seven people do not wear their seat belt. Other major problems are distracted, impaired and drunk driving, all of which frequently occur in this country.
Top Reasons for Vehicular Accidents
There are several reasons that a fatal two-vehicle accident can happen. They are:
- Alcohol use: Approximately, 40 percent of all deaths occur due to a drunk driver. This amounts to over 10,000 deaths each year.
- Speeding: This is a major cause of 33 percent of all fatalities on the road. Speeding causes the driver to lose control of his or her vehicle, causing any number of car accident types.
- Reckless driving: Thirty-three percent of all fatalities are caused by reckless driving. This includes many different types of driver behavior including aggressive driving.
Distracted Driving
Distracted driving is on the rise as a major area of concern for drivers. Approximately nine people are killed each day by driving distracted. Studies have revealed that one out of every three people text while they drive, taking their eyes from the road for an average of 4.5 seconds. This behavior has led to nine deaths every day. It also accounts for 1,060 serious injuries on a daily basis and a 23 times greater chance of being in an accident. Authorities have shown that distracted behavior is involved in 20 percent of all crashes. In addition to texting, distracted behavior includes talking on the phone, eating, speaking with other occupants or other acts such as gawking at roadside accidents. A two-vehicle accident, as well as many others, can be avoided by maintaining your focus on the road when driving.
What a Lawyer Can do For You After a Two-Vehicle Accident
An attorney is your advocate. He or she is there for you during negotiations with the insurance company and, if it becomes necessary in court, to make sure you recover the damages you deserve. An accident is just the beginning of a daunting chapter in your life. A lawyer will investigate the accident, review medical records to determine the extent of your injuries and calculate the financial loss resulting from the accident. He or she will also present you with your options going forward and answer your questions. Whether the attorney is negotiating a settlement or fighting for your rights in a civil court, their main focus is making sure you do not have to pay for damages caused by another. This allows you to focus your attention on your family, your health and your overall recovery.
