Reasons Most Accidents Happen
Every day accidents cause injuries and fatalities on the nation’s roads. Driving safely is one way to keep from being involved in a crash. However, there are plenty of drivers who do not heed such warnings. Here is a list of the most common reasons that accidents occur:
- Drunk driving: Nearly 10,000 people die every year due to drunk driving accidents. Despite warnings not to drive drunk, over 11 million drivers said in a study that they drive while impaired occasionally. Yet, only one million are arrested for a DUI. The odds of being involved in a drunk driving accident are astronomical. Drivers need to be observant of a vehicle changing lanes haphazardly.
- Distracted driving: Driving while taking one’s focus off the road is quickly becoming the number one cause of an accident. Activities such as talking on a cell phone, texting, eating, and applying makeup are all common. It is not possible to drive and do any one of these activities and operate a motor vehicle safely.
- Aggressive driving: Sometimes, people take out their frustrations on other drivers. Not only it is a citable offense, but it can also lead to an accident involving several vehicles.
- Speeding: The faster a vehicle is traveling, the more likely it is for a serious accident to occur. This is due to the fact that at a high speed, the impact is greater. Drivers are also less capable of maintaining control over their vehicles.
- Running a red light: This commonly happens at an intersection. Drivers have a million excuses ranging from being short on time to thinking about something else and not seeing the light turn red. Besides being a traffic infraction, this behavior leads to many intersection accidents.
- Inclement weather: Bad weather makes it difficult to drive safely for several reasons. For one, the roads become slippery, making it harder to control one’s vehicle or stop in time to avoid an accident. Secondly, the weather can make visibility poor, leading to an accident.
- Bad Roads: Lack of signage, potholes, and poor design all make roads treacherous. When an accident happens due to this, it is possible to file a claim against the government agency in charge of maintaining the roads.
- Tailgating: It is prudent to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of your car. Tailgating is basically a statement that your time is more important than anyone else on the road. When this occurs, it makes it impossible not to hit the lead vehicle if it slows suddenly. The tailgating driver would be held responsible for the accident.
What an Attorney Can Do to Help
Being involved in an accident can be traumatic and cause both physical and financial harm. In such cases, the injured party may need hospitalized medical care or be unable to work for an extended time. This leaves the individual with mounting bills. That is where my firm can help. Once we are on board, we send our investigative team to the accident site to determine who was at fault and how it happened. Our investigators use accident reconstruction techniques, interview witnesses, and review police reports for inaccuracies. They also obtain video footage from traffic surveillance cameras and nearby businesses. Once all this information is accumulated, our legal team uses it to build a strong case for our client.
