Two Vehicle Collision Ends in Tragedy in Elk Grove
I’m Ed Smith, an Elk Grove wrongful death lawyer. One fatality was reported following a collision between two vehicles at Elk Grove on February 3. The cause of the accident is being investigated by a police investigative team in Elk Grove. I want to extend my sympathy to family members and friends for the loss of their loved one in this tragedy.
What Happened?
According to a report by the Police Department in Elk Grove, the car accident happened sometime in the afternoon along Laguna Boulevard, close to Bruceville Road. An individual was driving east in a silver-colored truck, when he or she lost control of the vehicle, crashed into a street lamp and tree and then collided with a vehicle. Emergency personnel transported the injured driver to a local hospital. However, the driver died from the injuries suffered in the collision. The identity of the driver has yet to be released.
Single Vehicle Crashes
Single vehicle accidents are common and cause many injuries and fatalities every year. Many are caused by driver error such as distracted driving, overcorrecting and drunk driving. Others may be caused by mechanical or other problems with a vehicle such as a blown tire or bad brakes. Weather conditions can also contribute to single-vehicle crashes, particularly when snow or ice is on the ground or it is foggy out. Environmental factors that may contribute to single vehicle accidents include the way the road is aligned, number of lanes, lighting conditions and speed limits. Passenger cars are more likely to be involved in single-vehicle crashes than other types of vehicles such as trucks, vans or utility vehicles.
Risk Factors for Motor Vehicle Accidents
The National Institutes of Health performed a study of factors that increase the risk of a motor vehicle accident. The study concluded that the following factors were true:
- Inexperienced drivers had a high rate of accidents resulting in injuries or fatalities.
- Young drivers with teenage passengers in the vehicle were more at risk for a crash.
- Distracted driving, including talking on cell phones or texting, increased the accident risk.
- Drunk driving presents a risk with the most common age for drunk driving highest in 26 to 29-year-olds.
- Night driving increases risk because of the lessened visibility, increase in drunk drivers and glare from headlights.
- Males are much more likely to be in an accident than females. In the years 1975 through 2016, males were twice as likely to die in a motor vehicle accident than females.
2016 Data released by the U.S. Department of Transportation showed the following:
- Motor vehicle accident deaths caused by distracted driving decreased by 2.2 percent.
- Fatalities due to drunk driving rose by 1.7 percent.
- Deaths caused by drowsy driving decreased by 3.5 percent.
- Fatalities where speed was a factor decreased by 4.0 percent.
- Fatalities in crashes where seat restraints were not used increased by 4.6 percent.
