Two Vehicle Collision Injures Eureka Cyclist

I’m Ed Smith, a Eureka car accident lawyer. On July 20, 2017, a collision involving two motor vehicles sent an involved cyclist to a hospital.

Accident Details

The accident occurred at about 1:15 at the intersection of O and 4th Streets in Eureka. Eureka Police Department (EPD) Sgt. Eddie Wilson stated that the collision happened when a black Toyota Tacoma began driving north to cross 4th Street. The driver of the Toyota reportedly noticed that a cyclist was also crossing the roadway in the opposite direction and stopped suddenly in order to avoid a collision.

Wilson indicated that after the Toyota stopped to avoid the cyclist, a Chevy Avalanche that had been traveling west into the intersection was not able to react in time. The Avalanche consequently struck the side of the Toyota’s rear-end, forcing the Toyota to spin sideways and strike the cyclist.

Response and Injuries

After receiving reports indicating that a cyclist may have received traumatic injuries, the EPD sent emergency responders to the scene of the accident. Responders discovered that the cyclist was alert and responsive when they arrived. However, the cyclist was found to have sustained serious injuries to his lower body and was transported by medical crews to the nearest hospital to receive treatment.

Additionally, none of the occupants of the involved vehicles were injured and no other parties were involved in the collision.

Causal Factors

EPD is still actively investigating the incident in order to determine exactly what caused it to happen. Authorities have not yet indicated who they believe was responsible for causing the accident or whether or not they suspect any of the involved individuals to have been under the influence.

Bicycle Accidents

According to data gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), cyclists account for about 2 percent of all auto collision deaths as well as 2 percent of all traffic-related injuries in the united states. NHTSA also reports that cyclist deaths most often happen between 6 and 9 p.m. Additionally, their data shows that bicyclist deaths also happen about twice as often in urban areas than rural areas.

Avoiding Crashes

NHTSA includes a list of safety precautions that cyclists should take in order to avoid injury crashes while cycling. These precautions include:

  • Riding a bike that is the correct size
  • Riding a bike that is fully operational (no broken parts, faulty brakes)
  • Wearing safety equipment including helmets, bike lights, bright clothing, and reflectors.
  • Tucking pant legs and shoelaces to avoid getting them caught in the bike chain
  • Planning routes with slower traffic and fewer cars
