Interstate 5 Two-Vehicle Crash Causes Injuries
A two-vehicle crash on December 7 caused an injury to one person along Interstate 5 northbound near exit 518. It happened at the connection with US 50 in Sacramento. The accident occurred shortly before 4:30 in the afternoon, according to the report by the Sacramento Highway Patrol (CHP) and involved a Nissan Altima and Toyota Prius. The collision occurred when the Nissan struck the center divider and then came back to the right-hand side of the road and hit the Toyota. It was reported that an older man involved in the collision was injured. Both vehicles blocked the roadway while one of the cars was removed by a tow truck. The accident is under investigation by the CHP to determine how it happened and to place fault.
Highway Accidents
Accidents along the highway are almost always caused by driver negligence, and because vehicles are traveling at higher speeds, serious injuries and fatalities tend to occur. Some of the causes of these accidents are:
- Speeding: A motorist going above the speed limit can lose control of their car or truck, which can cause a two-vehicle crash.
- Distracted driving: Although hands-on use of a cell phone is prohibited in California, it remains a cause for many motor vehicle crashes. Even using a hands-free phone is dangerous because it takes the driver’s attention away from the road.
- Fatigue: Many people work long hours, split shifts, and stay up late at night. This means that the driver can begin daydreaming from exhaustion or fall asleep behind the wheel of the vehicle. Fatigue can easily lead to a two-vehicle crash.
- Aggressive drivers: Seen more and more frequently on the highways, an aggressive driver cuts in and out of traffic, tailgates, and generally endangers others on the road.
- Drunk or drugged drivers: A major cause of accidents, someone who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, even certain over-the-counter medications, can cause an accident. This can be because their reflexes are affected, judgment is clouded, and their ability to make proper decisions is faulty.
Obtaining Evidence in a Case Involving Negligence
When someone is injured by a negligent driver, they can face high medical costs and other expenses. If negligence by another was the cause of those injuries, an experienced lawyer can help them get the compensation they deserve. We send our investigators to the two-vehicle crash site right away to check the police report for mistakes and talk to the witnesses. However, this is just the beginning of our investigation. Traffic cameras and those from nearby businesses may offer videotape of the accident. The investigators will look for roadway damage that might have caused the accident due to negligence by the government entity in charge of maintenance. Accident reconstruction is performed in some cases, especially at intersections, because it can show whether a driver attempted to stop before causing a two-vehicle crash or committed a traffic error. When the evidence has been compiled, our lawyers go to work to build a strong case that shows the at-fault party’s negligence. This can be used if the case goes to civil court or when dealing with the insurance company.
