Accident Near Calvine Road Off-Ramp Reported in Evening Crash
A two-vehicle crash in Sacramento along State Route 99 caused injuries to one person on September 9. The accident happened along the southbound side of the highway just north of the Calvine Road off-ramp around 8:39 in the evening between a Honda Odyssey and another vehicle. According to the incident report filed by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the driver of one of the vehicles was found unconscious.
Injured Patient Transported to Hospital Following Two-Vehicle Crash
Emergency responders with the Sacramento Fire Department were called to the scene to assess that person’s injuries. The patient was transported to Kaiser South for additional treatment and evaluation. A tow truck removed the vehicle. The CHP is conducting an investigation into the cause of the two-vehicle crash and to discover which motorist was at fault.
How a Highway Two-Vehicle Crash Happens
Highways are common locations for many accidents, especially near on or off-ramps. Because motorists are trying to move over to reach an onramp and slowing down because the speed limits are slower, it can end up causing a two-vehicle crash. Some of these accidents happen for the following reasons:
- A driver who sees that another motorist is trying to enter their lane refuses to yield, which can lead to a rear-end collision.
- A negligent driver attempts to cross multiple lanes of traffic at the same time to avoid missing their exit. This type of maneuver can end up causing an accident involving multiple vehicles.
- A driver is in the right-hand lane and slows down prematurely to enter the ramp area. Another motorist traveling behind the vehicle is distracted by texting on their cell phone at the same time and ends up causing a two-vehicle crash.
- A speeding driver is unable to stop in time to avoid a two-vehicle collision or loses control of their car and sideswipes a nearby motorist.
- A driver who has been drinking enters a highway ramp going in the wrong direction and causes a head-on collision.
- A fatigued motorist who is too tired to be driving nods off and ends up drifting out of their lane and collides with another car.
Injuries in a Two-Vehicle Crash
The types of injuries suffered in a two-vehicle crash depend on several factors, including the speeds of both vehicles, location and size of the cars and/or light trucks. Following are some of the most common:
- Broken bones: When people see an accident heading toward them, they often lean forward and try to brace themselves with their arms instead of letting their seat belts do their job. Unfortunately, broken arms in a two-vehicle crash often occur this way. When the engine is forced into the passenger compartment by the impact, leg, ankle and foot fractures happen.
- Traumatic brain injuries: If the passengers in the vehicle aren’t using seat restraints or they are defective and break, a TBI can occur.
- Back and spinal cord damage: This type of serious injury often occurs in a rollover accident or T-bone collision.
- Abdominal trauma: This can range from internal bleeding to organ damage and happens in a rollover when the steering wheel is moved forward due to impact.
