Causes of a Two-Vehicle Crash at an Intersection
Intersections are among the most dangerous locations for motorists. The latest government statistics show that more than 50 percent of all collisions occur at intersections. Although the rate is somewhat lower at intersections with traffic lights, the difference isn’t enormous. Negligence by a driver is the normal cause of a two-vehicle crash. Types of negligence can include:
- Drunk drivers contribute to many accidents, including at intersections. Evenings and weekends are when a motorist is more likely to be involved in a collision caused by a drunk driver.
- Distracted drivers have become the number one cause of all types of accidents, including two-vehicle crashes at intersections. The types of distractions that are the most common are texting or talking on a cell phone. However, eating and drinking while driving, changing a radio station and other factors can contribute to a two-vehicle crash.
- Speeders contribute to many intersection accidents because they either run a red light or end up causing a rear-end collision.
- Tailgaters are a problem on city streets and highways. A vehicle that is following another too closely can cause a crash if the car up in front slows or stops suddenly.
- Making a right-hand turn without looking for pedestrians, bicyclists, and oncoming traffic from the left can result in a collision.
- Attempting to change lanes while in the middle of a left turn results in a sideswipe two-vehicle crash.
Why You May Need a Lawyer Following a Two-Vehicle Crash
While some drivers are ready to admit they are at fault for an accident, others are not. Their insurance companies, of course, will attempt to side with them to avoid paying compensation to anyone who was injured. Having an injury attorney at your side means that the accident will be investigated to prove who the at-fault party in the collision was.
By doing this, the insurance company or at-fault driver themself can be held responsible for any of the financial damage the accident caused. Some of the ways in which an investigation is held into the cause of an accident include:
- The investigators will perform forensic reconstruction of the two-vehicle crash. This shows how it occurred and often points toward fault. Insurance companies and courts find the reconstruction of an accident compelling evidence.
- The police report is checked for errors.
- Witness statements are taken that explain what they saw when the accident occurred. In some cases, a witness to the accident captured the accident on tape.
- The driving records of the other party involved in the collision are examined to see if they have committed previous infractions.
- Surveillance cameras nearby are looked at to see if the collision was captured on video. These can be subpoenaed as evidence.
