Ureter Reimplantation Following Trauma
Traumatic accidents can happen at any time. Some of the most common types of traumatic accidents include auto, bicycle, and motorcycle accidents. However, this can also include slip and fall injuries and truck accidents. Because of this, the traumatic injuries associated with these accidents can also take many forms. According to some statistics published recently by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), traumatic injuries are a significant drain on the healthcare system. Some of their data include:
- In 2015 alone, nearly three million people spent at least one night in a hospital for traumatic injuries.
- This does not include the nearly 30 million people who visited an emergency room for a severe injury.
- The total costs of injuries in 2013 totaled over $600 billion.
Some of these injuries include damage to the kidneys and ureters. In some cases, the ureters may even need to be re-implanted.
Symptoms of Ureteral Trauma
The role of the ureters is to transport urine from the kidneys to the bladder to remove it. Blood is filtered in the kidneys to remove toxins. These toxins are concentrated in the urine. If the ureters are damaged, people could have trouble creating urine. Some of the symptoms include:
- Blood in the urine
- A reduction in urine output
- Severe flank pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Altered mental status
- Drowsiness, fatigue, or even a coma
These symptoms stem from a reduction in urine output, significant trauma to the abdomen, and the buildup of toxins in the blood. If the ureter is detached, it needs to be reimplanted.
Reimplantation of a Ureter
When someone has symptoms suspicious of ureteral trauma, imaging scans are needed to locate the ureter and plan for a surgical approach. Then, a trained surgeon will open up the flank, find the ureter, and reimplant it on the kidney. Next, fluid will be flushed through the ureter to ensure sturdy attachment. Finally, the individual will be observed closely to ensure urine is produced from both kidneys. If this injury is caught early, most people will fully recover.
