Vacaville Accident Causes Power Outage
On Thursday, August 10, 2017, a car accident that resulted in an area man receiving traumatic injuries led to an estimated 4,000 residents losing power to their homes.
According to the Vacaville Police Department (VPD), the accident occurred at the intersection of Marshall Road and Cedar Brook Lane. A dark green pickup truck had reportedly been driving west on Marshall Road when the driver suffered a medical emergency. As a result of his condition, the driver lost control of his vehicle.
After the driver lost control, the vehicle continued down the street briefly before veering to the side of the road, where it struck a parked vehicle. After striking the parked vehicle, the truck continued onto the sidewalk, where it collided with a Pacific Gas and Electric transformer structure and another parked vehicle before coming to a stop after colliding head-on with a street light pole.
Injury and Response
The driver of the vehicle was found by medical responders to have sustained injuries during the crash. The man was transported by ambulance to the Vacaville Kaiser Permanente Medical Center for treatment of his injuries as well as his pre-existing medical condition.
The specific nature of the man’s injuries has not yet been reported. Additionally, VPD has not indicated that there were any other people involved in this accident.
A Dangerous Accident
VPD posted to their Facebook page about the incident, indicating that the safety shut-off feature of the transformer may not have been activated during the crash and that the exposed wires could potentially have been carrying 600 amps at 12,000 volts, enough to instantly kill anybody who came in contact with them.
VPD noted that they were thankful that none of the responding personnel from the VPD, the Vacaville Fire Department (VFD), or any people in the area were injured by the dangerously exposed wires. Firefighters from VFD promptly secured the area and stopped a flow of gasoline leaking from the wrecked vehicle.
Head-On Collisions
Accidents in which a vehicle collides with an object or another vehicle head-on can be severe. In fact, frontal collisions in which a vehicle is traveling over 40 miles per hour almost always leave occupants with catastrophic injuries.
Front-end collisions are liable to cause many different types of injuries, including spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, chest trauma, and cardiac contusions. Many of the injuries that happen due to frontal crashes can also result in death if they are severe enough.
