Vacaville To Enhance DUI Enforcement
The Vacaville City Council accepted a grant providing funds to local police in order to enhance enforcement for DUI and distracted driving. The $93,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety will allow the Vacaville Police Department (VPD) to improve on a variety of enforcement programs in order to reduce the number of dangerously impaired and distracted drivers on local roads. The grant was accepted during a city council meeting on Tuesday, November 12, 2019, and the funds will reportedly be utilized immediately and throughout 2020.
Enforcement Plans
VPD has indicated that they will be pursuing numerous projects using the state funding, including creating “Hot Sheets” in order to easily identify repeat offenders. Enforcement of intoxication and distraction will also be increased for both pedestrians and cyclists, according to reports.
VPD patrols will be targeting primary collision causes including speeding, signal and sign violations, dangerous turns, right-of-way violations, and more at an increased rate over the coming year. Officials say they believe these efforts will lead to a significant decrease in traumatic and fatal accidents on city roads. In addition to increased patrols for key dangerous driving factors, police say that they will also be enhancing enforcement for improper use of seat belts and child safety seats.
Additionally, general public education for issues related to distracted and intoxicated driving, biking, and walking, are being planned.
DUI in Vacaville
Throughout the last ten years, there have been nearly 400 intoxicated driving accidents in Vacaville, leaving more than 530 people with injuries and costing 23 individuals their lives. According to UC Berkeley data, accidents involving DUI were almost three times more likely to include a fatal trauma. Additionally, DUI collisions were around twice as likely to involve a severe injury.
DUI was listed as the primary causal factor in just around ten percent of Vacaville’s accident-causing injuries. This made DUI the third most common causal factor in Vacaville behind speeding and improper turning.
Reckless Driving and Liability
When somebody uses their phone while driving or chooses to operate a vehicle while under the influence, they are putting others’ lives in danger. Because of this, distracted and intoxicated drivers are considered negligent in the event of an accident. In California, negligent drivers can be held responsible for their reckless actions through personal injury and wrongful death claims. By filing a claim, crash survivors and their families are able to recover payments for a wide variety of damages related to accidents. These often include things like lost income, medical bills, household services, pain and suffering, and more.
However, it’s important to remember that the payments available vary widely depending on the specific circumstances of the accident. Furthermore, accident claims can be complicated, and making sure that you are fully compensated is often difficult. For these reasons, it’s important to talk with a local Vacaville personal injury lawyer who can give you the information you need to move forward with claiming the payments that you and your loved ones deserve.
