Vallejo Fatal Pedestrian Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Vallejo car accident attorney. A man and his dog lost their lives in an auto accident that occurred in Vallejo on Monday, January 29, 2018. The man was identified as a 63-year-old resident of Vallejo by the name of Michael James Thurin.

Our firm would like to express condolences to the deceased’s family and friends.

Accident Details

According to statements that were issued by the Vallejo Police Department (VPD), the accident took place at approximately 6:40 a.m. on Springs Road a short distance east of the Oakwood Avenue intersection. Officers reported that Thurin had been attempting to walk his dog across Springs road when he was hit by an oncoming maroon-colored 2003 Mercedes that had been driving west on Springs Road.

Thurin had been crossing the street somewhere near the middle of the block between the Dairy Queen and the Bank of America and had been in between two separate crosswalks marked on the roadway, one being located at the Oakwood Avenue and Springs Road intersection and the other a few hundred feet to the east of where the collision occurred.

Fatal Injuries

When responders got to the site of the crash they found that Thurin had sustained fatal injuries. Thurin was later declared deceased at the scene of the collision. His dog was also found to have received fatal trauma as a result of the crash.

The driver of the Mercedes was reportedly not injured. Additionally, no other people or vehicles were involved in the collision.

Investigation

VPD is currently conducting an investigation in order to determine what the factors at play were during this incident. The Mercedes driver, identified only as a 38-year-old male from Vallejo, remained at the scene of the accident and assisted officers with their on-site preliminary investigations.

Officers have not reported suspecting driving under the influence to have been involved in this accident. Factors that may have been involved are numerous and include common accident factors like driving at unsafe speeds, faulty vehicle parts, lack of proper roadway signage, driver distraction or fatigue, and more.

Also, individuals who have information pertinent to this case have been asked by VPD to get in touch with Officer Jim Melville of the VPD Traffic Division by calling (707) 648-4014. Callers are asked to refer to the case numbered 18-1106.

Recoverable Damages

When a party is found to be at-fault for the death of an individual, those who were close to the deceased are often able to hold the negligent party financially responsible and recover for their various damages. The damages that are recoverable in wrongful death cases represent a wide range of losses including loss of inheritance, loss of income, medical and funeral expenses, and more.
