Elderly Man Injured in Vallejo Hit-and-Run
One person suffered injuries during a hit-and-run accident that took place in Vallejo on Monday, December 30, 2019. According to the Vallejo Police Department (VPD), the accident happened on the west side of the city and involved a single vehicle as well as a pedestrian. The injured pedestrian was identified as an 85-year-old man who had been using a wheelchair at the time of the crash. Medical officials indicated that the injured man has since been released from hospital custody.
Crash Information
The accident reportedly happened on the 400 block of Redwood Street near the intersection at Sacramento Street. An accident witness called VPD at 9:07 a.m. to report the crash. Officers say that when they arrived at the accident site, they found that a 1980 Plymouth Arrow pickup had struck the man while he was crossing the road.
Police indicated that they believe the pickup truck driver exited his vehicle for a short time before getting back in and driving away from the accident scene. His vehicle was located later in the day and impounded. However, the VPD is still trying to locate the missing driver.
Investigation
Officers have asked for help from the public with finding the missing driver. Anybody with information about the drivers’ location should contact VPD’s traffic division at (707) 648-4329 and refer to case number 19-15506. VPD has released photos of the suspect that can be found on their facebook page.
Pedestrian Injuries
Pedestrian injuries are often very serious and can be even worse if the collision survivor is an elderly person. Because pedestrians aren’t behind walls of steel and are not protected by safety features like seatbelts or airbags, they are often left with more severe injuries than vehicle occupants. These can include things like pelvic fractures, femur fractures, traumatic brain injuries, and more.
Vallejo Hit-and-Run Accidents
With normal collision cases, injured parties are able to file personal injury claims against negligent parties in order to claim payments to cover their medical expenses as well as compensation for lost income and other damages. However, with a hit-and-run crash, it’s possible that the negligent party won’t be found. For this reason, many hit-and-run survivors worry about how they will be able to afford to recover their health.
In cases where the negligent party can’t be found, injured parties are often able to claim payments through their own insurance policies. This is possible through what is called “uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage,” which is an optional portion of your policy. Because this type of coverage isn’t mandatory, the amount of payment available depends on the type of policy you have.
