Vallejo Pedestrian Safety Operation

The event is part of a special enforcement effort that aims to focus on factors that cause collisions between pedestrians and motorists. Operation Details
VPD has determined a few locations in the city that have seen numerous pedestrian collisions over the last three years. Authorities noted in a news release that they’ve compiled the data from pedestrian accidents at these locations in order to better understand what sorts of violations typically are causing the trouble.
Officers will be deployed to these locations on Friday in order to prevent violations that officials say are likely to continue leaving pedestrians with fatal and life-changing traumatic injuries.

Authorities reported that officers will be paying special attention to drivers who exceed speed limits, make illegal turns, fail to stop for signals and signs, fail to yield to pedestrians, and other dangerous traffic violations.
VPD has stated that they will be heavily enforcing pedestrian violations as well. Pedestrians in these patrolled areas who fail to yield to drivers with the right-of-way or cross streets illegally outside of designated crosswalks can expect to be fined.
History of Injury
Officials noted that Vallejo has seen many fatal and injury pedestrian accidents in recent years and that operations like this are meant to combat the trend. Additionally, VPD indicated that the problem is state-wide, citing that 23 percent of all traffic fatalities in California are pedestrian fatalities. This, officials explained, is much higher than the national average, which is 15 percent.
Patrolled Areas
Officers will be paying specific attention to areas such as Marin Street and Curtola Parkway, Capitol and Sonoma Streets, Broadway and Illinois Streets, and Sonoma and Arkansas streets, all which have high rates of accidents in which pedestrians are injured.
Avoiding Pedestrian Collisions
There are steps that both drivers and pedestrians can take to increase safety on roadways. For instance, drivers can simply keep a sharp eye out for pedestrians, especially in low visibility conditions. Drivers can also slow down in areas in which pedestrians are likely to be walking such as intersections and crosswalks.
Pedestrians looking to walk more safely can do things such as walk facing traffic in order to spot any oncoming vehicles, make eye contact with drivers as they approach, and be predictable. Being predictable can be especially helpful, as drivers will not have to anticipate unexpected pedestrians maneuvers.
