Vallejo Police Department’s Super Bowl DUI Strategy

I’m Ed Smith, a Vallejo car accident lawyer. This coming Sunday marks the 51’st Super Bowl. Football fans are already preparing to watch the big game by stocking up on their favorite game-day snacks and, more importantly, plenty of drinks. The Vallejo Police Department has stated that it will be coordinating with the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), as well as law enforcement around the state of California, for a special campaign to reduce the instances of drunk driving and, consequently, the number of serious and fatal injuries caused by drunk driving accidents.

Extra Patrols

In anticipation of the festivities, the Vallejo Police Department, the sheriff’s office, and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be heavily patrolling roadways on heightened alert. The VPD has stated that it plans to deploy additional officers on specific patrols during heightened periods of expected driving under the influence saturation in order to apprehend and arrest motorists who show symptoms of drug or alcohol impairment. The department plans to deploy these patrols before, during, and also after the Super Bowl.

Reminders from the Department

The VPD has issued a statement reminding the public that driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs can be a fatal decision and that all it takes for a motorist to be considered to be illegally driving while under the influence is a blood alcohol level of .08. They also noted that, although this is the legal limit, even a small portion of alcohol has the ability to reduce reaction times and impair the judgement of drivers, making them more unsafe in already unsafe situations.

Sobering Stats

The department also reminded citizens that the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration reported that in 2015 alone, some 10,265 people lost their lives due to DUI collisions, making DUI collisions responsible for almost one-third of all fatal crashes across the nation.

Ways to Stay Safe

Vallejo Chief of Police Andrew Bidou advised those who plan to drink on Sunday to designate a sober driver, call a taxi, use a rideshare program, or use public transportation to avoid driving under the influence. Officials also recommended downloading the phone application “Designated Driver VIP”, a free application that helps users to find nearby venues that offer perks like free meals or non-alcoholic drinks for designated drivers.

Report Drunk Drivers

The enforcement efforts of this weekend are funded by a grant given and by the California Office of Traffic Safety and NHTSA, who would like to remind all citizens to be on the lookout and report drunk drivers immediately by calling 911.
