Vallejo Single-Vehicle Collision

I’m Ed Smith, a Vallejo personal injury lawyer. On Wednesday, April 19, 2017, a single-vehicle collision in Vallejo that totaled the vehicle occurred as the result of speeding and, possibly, road rage.

Accident Details

The accident occurred at about 10:30 p.m. on Sonoma Boulevard at the intersection of Iflan Way, less than a block south of the junction at Highway 37. Witnesses described seeing the vehicle, an older, champagne-colored Toyota Corolla driving north on the main road at dangerous speeds and ignoring traffic lights and stop signs. One witness of the accident reported that “It looked like the vehicle was going about 50 or 60 miles per hour.”

Reportedly, the vehicle then swerved sharply into a concrete median divider for no apparent reason. Those who saw the accident reported that it was unclear whether or not the driver had lost control of their vehicle, or simply did not see the divider before attempting a high-speed U-turn.

Once the vehicle struck the divider, its front-end wheels were totally destroyed. Witnesses described seeing the vehicle go airborne for a short period of time before skidding to a halt near the curb of the southbound section of Sonoma Boulevard.

Vallejo Single-Vehicle Collsion – Injuries and Cleanup

Witnesses told reporters that the driver, a young adult male, exited the totaled vehicle by himself, apparently uninjured. The driver immediately used his cell phone to call for towing services, since all of the vehicle’s tires had been knocked off by the collision and the front end of the car was severely crumpled. The towing company reportedly arrived in about 15 minutes and took the vehicle and its driver away.

Road Rage

The Vallejo Police Department did not respond to this incident and it is unknown whether or not the driver of the vehicle was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. However, aggressive driving, such as the kind here described by witnesses, is often the result of drivers who are operating their vehicles while in an emotionally compromised state. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), aggressive driving is the cause of 66 percent of all fatal traffic accidents in the United States and, furthermore, some 1,500 people lost their lives due to aggressive driving and road rage accidents between 2009 and 2014.

Preventing Road Rage Accidents

Road rage accidents are particularly tragic because, in most cases, they can be easily prevented. It is important to be aware of your own emotional state, as well as the emotional states of those around you. If you suspect that you or someone you know is in an emotional state that would make it dangerous for them to operate a vehicle, wait a while until you do so, or else advise the same to others. Also, remember that it is important to remain calm and alert while driving so as to maximize your ability to avoid dangerous traffic situations.
