Vallejo Waterfront Weekend
I’m Ed Smith, a Vallejo personal injury lawyer. For Vallejo Residents, October 7 marks a particular day, the beginning of Vallejo’s annual Waterfront Festival. The festival will take place over the weekend of Oct 7 and 8 along Vallejo’s historic waterfront, offering residents and visitors myriad activities, food, and music and a chance to benefit and familiarize themselves with local nonprofit organizations.
A New Tradition
The 2017 Vallejo Waterfront Festival will be the fourth of its kind. Local organizers hope the continuing festival will become a premier event that locals look forward to as a part of the city’s culture and believe this year’s festival will bring them closer to that goal by being bigger and more fun than ever.
Benefitting the Community
The festival has been a community-based event since its founding. Over the last three years, it has raised money to renovate Vallejo’s Bay Terrace Theatre at the Mira Community Cultural Center. However, this year, the event has extended its fundraising to eight other local nonprofits, including Vallejo Community Arts Foundation’s Project on Capitol Street Stairs, Friends of Loma Vista Farms, Leadership Vallejo, California Maritime Academy Boating Safety, Shakespeare in the Park, The Robby Poblete Foundation, The McCune Foundation, and Genesis House.
Nonprofits Speak
Henry Beecher, a member of the McCune Foundation, which offers the public access to an extensive collection of rare books at Vallejo’s JFK library, said that he is excited to be one of the event’s benefactors and that funds from the event will help the McCune foundation to ensure that their collection is preserved for public use.
Sarah Nichols, who spoke for the Capitol Stairs project, said that members look forward to participating in the festival and that the community’s support is “the magic that will make (the Capitol Stairs project) happen.”
Dalia Vidor, the producer of the local Shakespeare in the Park group, told reporters that if they didn’t have the support of community events and organizations like the Vallejo Waterfront Weekend, they would be unable to bring professional-level live theater to the community every summer.
Festival Events
In addition to booths hosted by over 25 local nonprofit groups, the Vallejo Waterfront Festival will include fun activities such as car shows, a chili cooking competition, a beer garden featuring local brews, a Kid Zone hosted by the Greater Vallejo Recreation District, a dunk tank, a triathlon, a glow run, guided tours of Mare Island and the Waterfront, and music from popular cover bands of The Rolling Stones and The Beatles.
Event organizers have stated they are going out on entertainment this year to get locals to visit the waterfront and support their community. Those looking to attend or learn more about the event can visit the event’s website.
