Single-Vehicle Accident Reported on Norwood Avenue Off-Ramp
During a westbound I-80 collision in Sacramento on July 2, a driver lost control of their vehicle, which went airborne off an exit ramp. The collision occurred just east of the Norwood Avenue off-ramp. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a gray van suddenly crossed over all four lanes of traffic and went off the right-hand side of the freeway ramp, trapping one individual inside the car.
Fire Crews Extricate One Person From the Vehicle
Witnesses who stopped to assist said the vehicle went airborne and was spinning. The vehicle came to a stop about 75 feet down an embankment. Crews with the Sacramento Fire Department arrived to extricate the trapped individual.
CHP Investigating Cause of I-80 Collision
The slow lane of the highway was shut down while a wrecker pulled the van back onto the roadway. No information on injuries to the parties inside was provided. The CHP is investigating the solo-vehicle crash to find out why it occurred.
Negligence as the Cause of a Freeway Accident
Most accidents that occur on freeways, including an I-80 collision, are due to driver negligence, including:
- Speeding
- Distracted driving
- Changing lanes without signaling
- Tailgating
- Drunk driving
Other Factors That Can Cause an Accident
Additional factors that can lead to an I-80 collision include:
- Auto defects can cause a highway crash: There are many parts of an automobile that, if they are defective or fail, can lead to an accident. Brakes that fail, a tire that blows out, a steering wheel that locks, and many other issues can cause a driver to lose control. When an accident occurs, it is important to retain the vehicle to check for auto part defects. When it turns out to be a defective part, the injured party, with the help of an injury lawyer, can file a claim against the manufacturer and others by filing an auto product liability claim.
- Poor road maintenance can lead to an I-80 collision: Shoddy or neglected road maintenance can contribute to an accident, including an I-80 collision. From potholes to heaves in the pavement, soft shoulders, weakened guardrails, and poor lighting, any of these factors can cause a crash. When the government entity in charge of maintenance has let these areas go without rectifying them, they can be held liable for any accident injuries or fatalities. The timeline for filing against a government entity is shorter. Using an injury attorney who handles government claims can ensure that all paperwork is filed in a timely manner. Otherwise, the court will refuse to hear the case.
- Aggressive drivers: Aggressive drivers are becoming more common these days as people take out their dissatisfaction with their lives on others sharing the roadway. An aggressive driver is one who may tailgate, change lanes erratically, crowd another vehicle and yell slurs or even force another driver off the road. By investigating the accident, it can be determined whether another driver caused the collision. In many cases, the accident was captured on film by a nearby surveillance camera.
