Ventura State Fair Loses Attendance Numbers

Ventura State Fair by the Numbers
Many California residents come to the Ventura County State Fair every year. Its family-oriented attractions and events for every age group has propelled it to become one of the leading sources of summertime enjoyment. Last year a record number of people attended the far with 332,262 attendees. This year there were 26,580 less visitors, which is an eight percent drop. The fair’s marketing director said that competing with last years record attendance might make this year’s 305,746 share seem smaller than it actually is.
Factors That Affected Attendance
The weather and an accident that occurred recently in Ohio might have affected the visitor numbers. The weather was unusually damp and humid, something that kept some revelers at home.
An amusement ride accident that occurred in Ohio on July 26 might have been responsible for the dip in attendance as well. The Ohio accident in which one person died and several others were killed on the Fire Ball ride was recently said to be due to high corrosion of an interior portion of a support beam, according to the manufacturer. The ride collapsed forcing several of the front seat rows and parts of the structure to break apart while in motion, causing riders to be thrown from the ride while airborne. As a result, six Fire Ball rides were shut down in California and many amusement park goers were said to be generally frightened by the safety of the equipment.
Other Tragedies in Ventura County
Less than a week prior to the start of the fair, Ventura County experienced the second accident in July where three individuals died. The head-on crash happened on Highway 101 in the early morning hours near Seaward Avenue. According the California Highway Patrol, the driver was traveling at speeds in excess of 100 mph before hitting another vehicle with two people on board. All three were killed in the collision.
Head-On Crashes
Although head-on crashes are not as common as other types of accidents, they lead to over 10 percent of fatal accidents. Injuries suffered in a head-on crash include fractures, spine injury and traumatic brain injury. Head-on crashes are less common in cities where they account for seven percent or less of fatal crashes.
