Young Woman Dies Shortly After Attending Music Festival
A young woman, who was from Ventura, died after going to a Monterey County festival on May 28.
I would like to express my condolences to the family of the woman who died from this tragedy. The death of a family member can be devastating.
What Happened
The woman, a 20-year-old, died shortly after 3:20 in the morning at a Templeton hospital shortly after her arrival. She fell ill at the festival, said to be attended by 25,000 people this year, and an on-site ambulance left for the hospital around 1:30 in the morning. An autopsy and toxicology screen are scheduled for May 31 to determine the cause of death.
According to a representative of the sheriff’s office in San Luis Obispo County, she had attended what is billed as a transformational festival in Bradley, California. The festival was held at San Antonio Lake.
The investigation into the woman’s death is under the auspices of county officials. Since the woman died after attending the festival, members of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office will join in by reviewing the events that preceded her death at the festival. It could be 6-8 weeks before drug testing is complete. The sheriff’s commander reported that a detective will be investigating to see if the woman was given an illicit substance without knowing it.
The Festival
The festival advertises itself as drug-free and is said to be an event the entire family can enjoy. The medical staff at the festival is extensive and includes over 100 medical professionals, such as physicians, paramedics, EMTs, nurses, and more. There are two well-equipped ambulances. In addition, representatives from the sheriff’s department are there around-the-clock.
Things to Be Aware of at Festivals
While enjoying a festival is important, being aware of hazards is essential. With summer festivals, heat is problematic and it is necessary to hydrate well.
Traveling alone is another hazard. Stay together, and if you do separate, have a central point to rendezvous. Since drugs often find their way into festival grounds, only drink sealed drinks or ones procured directly from a vendor.
However, negligence such as improper policing of the grounds or a breakdown in medical care can lead to injuries and death. Failure by vendors to keep food safe for consumption can lead to food poisoning.
