A Low-Key Holiday Marketplace
The annual holiday event, Victorian Christmas in Nevada City, has been recognized nationally. Some call Nevada City California’s most festive Christmas town. In the past, Traveler magazine has named it one of the best European-style Christmas markets in the country. The market is still happening this year, but because of COVID-19, it is quite a bit different from past seasons. The 2020 rendition of Victorian Christmas is low-key but retains the holiday spirit and historic charm that brings joy to the community every year.
Changes Due to COVID-19
Nevada County is one of the counties that were affected by the December 11th Regional Stay at Home Order, which is active for a minimum of three weeks. During that time, retail shops are allowed to remain open at 20% capacity. Restaurants are only offering take-out, and masks are required throughout downtown Nevada City. These restrictions have required some creative reimagining of Victorian Christmas by the city’s Chamber of Commerce.
Nevada City’s Victorian Christmas 2020 will place emphasis on highlighting the town’s quaint retail shops and boutiques, along with local restaurants. The streets, buildings, and nearby homes will continue to feature beautiful holiday decorations. Because of the pandemic, none of the streets will be closed to accommodate the usual crowds, and there will be no outdoor vendors. Rest assured, though, on Sunday afternoons, Father Christmas will still appear.
Christmas Shopping in Nevada City

Additionally, participating retailers have showcased their shop and wares online via their own websites or social media accounts. If you are unable to locate your favorite shop online, it is recommended you call the business directly.
The Chamber of Commerce has put together a Holiday Gift Guide showcasing local merchants and businesses.

Closing Out a Difficult Year
Thankfully, we are more knowledgeable about how to contain a pandemic than we were during the Victorian era when they dealt with their own plague. Even so, this year, with its restrictions on social and family gatherings has been tough on us all. The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce is aware that 2020 has asked a lot of us – more than anyone could have imagined when the year began. The hope by continuing the Victorian Christmas to the extent they are responsibly able is that visitors will still be able to enjoy a welcoming, warm, and joyous small-town Christmas celebration.
