What Happened?
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), one person was fatally injured and three others were hurt Sunday evening in a two-car, head on crash in Sacramento.
A 50-year-old man from Sacramento was driving a Chevy 1500 at around 10:00 p.m. last night. He was travelling along Watt Avenue in a vicinity located south of Robertson Avenue, according to officers.
Witnesses Report What They Observed
Witness said they observed that the suspect vehicle had a flat right back tire. They said the driver was speeding. Witnesses estimated the suspect driver’s speed to be between 60 and 70 miles per hour when he suddenly lost control of the Chevy. The vehicle then crossed over a center median facing in the wrong direction and crashed head on with a Ford Explorer, according to the officers with the CHP.
At least one person in the vehicle struck by the suspected drunk driver may have suffered catastrophic injuries.
Suspected DUI Driver Dies From His Injuries
The suspect driver of the Chevy was transported to Mercy San Juan Medical Center. Officials there indicated he later died. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his family members.
Driver and Passengers in Ford Explorer Seriously Injured
The driver and two passengers inside the Ford Explorer had to be transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries they sustained in the crash. One person suffered a broken leg and is being treated at UC Davis Medical Center. A teenager suffered spinal injuries and was transported to Mercy San Juan Medical Center for treatment. The third person suffered complaints of pain and was taken to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment.
What Was The Official Cause of the Crash?
It is early in the investigation, however, the CHP said the man driving the Chevy, who passed away, is suspected of driving under the influence.
Driving Under the Influence of Drugs and/or Alcohol
“Driving while inoxicated”, or “Driving under the influence”, is the term used to describe alcohol-related driving behavior. Drunk drivers are responsible for close to 1/3 of all motor vehicle fatalities in our country. Many of these drunk motorists are habitual offenders.
A drunk driver may not only kill himself (as in the crash above) but can also cause serious injury and death to other innocent pedestrians, motorists and their passengers.
Anyone who causes a motor vehicle accident while driving drunk is considered negligent.
Unfortunately, this is of little help to someone who has suffered injuries or lost a family member or friend in an alcohol-related crash. The driver convicted of driving under the influence is responsible to compensate for all damages caused to those hurt by his or her actions.
