Weakness Following a Car Accident

Following a severe motor vehicle collision, one of the most complaints that people have is a weakness. There are many possible causes of weakness, just as there are many possible causes of car accidents. Some of the most common reasons that individuals are involved in motor vehicle accidents include:

  • Equipment failure of the vehicle.
  • Drunk driving or driving while under the influence of drugs.
  • Poor road conditions such as potholes, debris, or other infrastructure issues.
  • Distracted driving including talking on the cell phone while behind the wheel.
  • Bad weather including thunderstorms, blizzards, and even darkness.

Following an auto accident, individuals may sustain serious injuries. These could range from scrapes and bruises to femur fractures and traumatic brain injuries. Regardless of the injury severity, individuals may also feel weak. This can be incredibly frustrating because this weakness can prevent people from returning to school, work, or even getting out of bed in the morning.

Weakness Due to Nerve Damage

There are many different types of weakness that people could feel after a serious car accident. One of the possible causes is nerve damage. In some cases, individuals might feel like they simply cannot move their arms and legs. Their limbs might not feel sore; however, they still cannot move as well as they used to. Some of the other signs of nerve damage include:

  • Numbness or tingling of the arms and legs.
  • Shooting pains down the arms and legs.
  • A loss in the range of motion of one or more of their limbs.

If individuals present with signs of weakness following a severe car accident, the doctor might order tests to see if the nerves have been damaged. This could include an MRI or nerve conduction studies. After this, the treatment plan will depend on the severity of the nerve damage.

Muscle Damage After a Car Accident

Another possible cause of weakness is damage to the muscle tissues. If the muscles have been injured, people might notice that they cannot move their arms or legs as well. Weakness due to muscle damage causes very different symptoms when compared to weakness due to nerve damage. Some of the signs of muscle damage after a car accident includes:

  • Severe aches, pains, and soreness of the arms and legs.
  • Bruises that appear over the muscle tissue.
  • Pain that gets worse with movement.

Most muscle damage will heal on its own with rest, ice, and heat. In some cases, the doctor might order tests to rule out severe muscle damage. These tests are performed to look for severe muscle tears and, in some cases, ruptured ligaments and tendons.
