Weed Killer Recipes Without Roundup™
It was 1970 when Monsanto chemist John Franz made a groundbreaking discovery that changed the course of weed killing as we know it. He figured out that glyphosate was an incredibly strong herbicide that can kill virtually any type of plant material out there. Shortly after the company’s discovery, they branded their “miracle” weed killer product under the name Roundup™.
The History and Controversy of Roundup™
Farmer’s went crazy for Roundup™. However, it was only shortly after the Roundup™ craze when a widespread problem emerged: Roundup™ weed killer was destroying not just the weeds, but also the crops themselves. The chemists at Monsanto went back to work with the intention of creating crops that will be glyphosate-resistant through genetically modifying their DNA. This way, farmers would be able to use Roundup™ without worry of their crop’s survival.
Roundup™, glyphosate, and GMO crops have become widely controversial in recent years. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has concluded that exposure to glyphosate can increase cancer risk for rare blood cancers, such as leukemia and lymphoma. Furthermore, Roundup™ lawsuits have been jumping up frequently. Even in the midst of all this controversy and negative attention, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hasn’t found any concrete evidence that would remove Roundup™ from the market.
Safe Alternatives to Roundup™ Weed Killer
There are quite a few reasons to not buy Roundup™, with one of the biggest factors being its costly price. While it’s chemical safety has yet to be completely determined, there is an abundant number of non-toxic, cheaper alternatives. In fact, you most likely can kill your weeds just by grabbing a few things out of your kitchen! Below are some common household products that can be used in combination with other ingredients to kill any nasty weeds laying around your property.
- White Vinegar: Distilled white vinegar containing 5 percent acidity is cost-effective and will promise results. Getting white vinegar with 20 percent acidity or more will produce results much faster, although the outcome will be the same regardless.
- Table Salt: This may be the cheapest option out there. You don’t need any fancy type of salt, just plain iodized salt.
- Dishwasher Liquid: The brand of dishwasher liquid doesn’t matter since you will only be using drops of it. When using dishwasher liquid in combination with vinegar, it allows the vinegar to cling to the surface of weeds and forces the weeds to absorb the vinegar more readily.
Weed Killer Recipes for Replanted Areas
If you would like to remove weeds in areas that you want to make use of for replanting purposes, follow these instructions: Fill a garden sprayer with one teaspoon of liquid dishwasher soap and then add white vinegar. Put on the sprayer top and follow the instructions to get the sprayer ready for use. That’s it! It’s really that simple. Another tip is to pick a dry, hot day for weed spraying. This will make the weeds shrivel up quicker than you would expect.
