Woman and Infant Injured in Modesto Pedestrian Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto personal injury lawyer. A woman was pushing a stroller with a 6-month-old baby inside east Modesto on the night of Sunday, April 22, 2018. The woman was inside the marked crosswalk at Yosemite Boulevard and Santa Ana Avenue when an oncoming vehicle collided with her and the infant. The impact of the collision reportedly propelled the stroller approximately 50 feet from the scene with the infant inside. Emergency responders transported the infant to an area hospital for treatment of abrasions, bruising and swelling while the woman was treated at the scene and declined medical transport.

What Caused the Accident?

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has not yet released a cause of the pedestrian accident as an investigation is underway. The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident indicated that they had braked but was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision. Authorities reported that alcohol and drugs are not believed to have played as factors in the crash.

Common Injuries from Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable in collisions with motor vehicles due to their lack of physical protection. Following are the common types of injuries sustained in a pedestrian accident:

  • Bone Fractures: Commonly referred to as broken bones, this type of medical condition occurs when there is a complete or partial break in the structure of a bone. The severity of a fracture varies upon the location and fracture subtype. Some of the common fracture subtypes that can present in adults and children include a comminuted fracture, a pathologic fracture, an oblique fracture, a stress fracture and a transverse fracture.
  • Spinal Cord Injury (SCI): This involves trauma to any area of the spinal column, including cells and nerve tracts within the spinal cord. Severe SCI can lead to secondary complications such as autonomic dysreflexia, deep vein thrombosis, heterotopic ossification, spasticity, pressure sores, syringomyelia, and pain.
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI): A disturbance or impact of the brain, whether caused organically or by trauma, can lead to a brain injury. A TBI is usually defined as mild, moderate or severe and can require extensive rehabilitation to treat common symptoms such as memory loss, headaches, loss of consciousness, nausea, and changes in mood.
  • Wrongful Death: When a vehicle is traveling at a high rate of speed, a pedestrian is likely to suffer extensive damage to their internal organs. Such trauma can cause a significant amount of blood loss that can result in wrongful death.

Any type of pedestrian injury can lead to extended hospital stays and a long pathway to recovery. If you or a loved one has suffered injuries in a pedestrian accident caused by a negligent party, you may be entitled to restitution for resulting damages. Retaining an experienced personal injury lawyer in Modesto is vital in building a strong case and protecting your right to fair compensation.
