Woman Killed in Single-Car Accident
A woman from Buellton was killed on Tuesday, April 18, when her vehicle went through a guardrail near a rest area close to Gaviota. Neither alcohol nor drugs were believed to be a reason for the crash. We want to extend our sympathy to the family of the deceased woman in their time of tragic loss.
What Happened
According to a representative of the California Highway Patrol, the woman, 57, was driving her 2008 Honda south on Highway 101, north of the off-ramp for Highway 1, when the woman failed to maintain control of the car on the road, which was wet at the time. Her car slammed through the road’s guardrail and overturned. She was alone in the vehicle, and the injuries the woman sustained in the crash were fatal.
Around 8:30 in the morning, the accident was responded to by the CHP, a helicopter, ambulance, and the county fire department from Santa Barbara. One lane of Highway 101 was shut down while crews worked on repairing the guardrail. The CHP is currently conducting an investigation into the reason for the crash.
One-Car Accidents
This type of accident is common and includes rollover accidents, run-off-road accidents, crashes involving animals or debris left in the road. Driver error is a significant feature of this type of crash and driving while impaired, distracted driving, falling asleep at the wheel, and driving at high speeds are often cited.
Poor weather is another causal factor in one-car crashes. For instance, poor drainage on the roads, not having chains or all-weather tires when driving on icy or snow-covered roads all contribute to the chance of a car accident. Roadway issues such as sharp curves without proper warning, narrow lanes, or ill-marked roadways have a part to play.
Vehicular handling is also important when navigating certain roads. This includes a propensity to respond poorly when cornering, accelerating, or braking. Rollovers are more common in vehicles with a high center of gravity. In addition, cars with a heavy front end can understeer while those with a heavy rear tend to oversteer. Being aware of your vehicle’s tendencies can help you navigate on the road.
Medical Emergencies
Another reason for one-vehicle crashes is the onset of a medical emergency. Drivers with certain medical conditions such as epilepsy, heart disease, or diabetes among others may have an asymptomatic episode while driving. This can be evidenced by examining the person’s medical reports, particularly their medical history.
