Woman Hospitalized After Chico Crash

Authorities reported that a collision in Chico left one woman hospitalized on Wednesday, October 9, 2019. The crash took place at a highway location within city limits in the early afternoon. Officers of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) report that the collision seems to have been caused by a “no-contact hit-and-run” in which a vehicle forced another car into an accident without actually contacting it. According to medical officials, the injured woman is expected to recover from her injuries. The accident remains under investigation.

Crash Details

CHP reports indicate that the collision happened at about 1:48 p.m. CHP Officer Bob Snoke told reporters that a woman had been driving north on Highway 99 close to the 20th Avenue off-ramp. Snoke indicated that it seems as if another vehicle attempted to cut her off, prompting her to make a collision-avoidance maneuver. After attempting to avoid the accident, the woman’s vehicle left the road and crashed head-on into a nearby tree.

Reportedly, the woman was found with injuries at the accident site, and medical responders had her loaded onto an ambulance and transported to the Enloe Medical Center. No other individuals were hurt during this incident. Additionally, no updates on whether or not police have been able to locate the missing vehicle or driver have been reported.

Phantom Vehicle Accidents

When a vehicle causes an accident without ever making contact, and the driver leaves the scene of the crash, it is referred to as a “phantom vehicle accident.” These collisions are a lot like hit-and-runs because the negligent driver often cannot be found, making it impossible to hold them personally responsible for the damages that they caused.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

When there isn’t a negligent driver to hold financially liable, crash survivors are often worried about how they will be able to afford their medical bills and other expenses related to the crash. However, many people can recover these costs through their own insurance by filing an uninsured/underinsured motorist claim. However, this type of coverage is optional in the state of California, and available payments differ depending on your specific insurance plan.

Even if your insurance plan includes uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, insurers often try to pay out less than their clients actually deserve for accident injuries. For this reason, it’s a good idea to speak to an attorney about your accident in order to find out what payments you can expect to claim.
