Woodland High School Teacher Charged with Child Molestation
I’m Ed Smith, a Woodland Sexual Abuse Lawyer. Most children look up to their teachers and many students will keep in touch with their teachers after they graduate because of the influence that they had in their lives. This trust was broken when a Woodland High School teacher was recently arrested and charged with child molestation.
Accusations of Inappropriate Touching
Unfortunately, sexual assault in schools has spent a significant amount of time in the spotlight of the national media and likely will continue to do so with this recent arrest. A police officer and detective from the Woodland area responded to a call at the Woodland High School. District officials had been informed of disturbing allegations that a 44-year-old teacher from the high school was accused of touching a female student inappropriately. The law enforcement officers responded and arrested the teacher shortly after the allegations were made.
Not the First Allegation
While schools aren’t the only places where sexual assault against children may occur (clergy sexual assault has also been an area of focus), this wasn’t the first time the teacher had been accused of an inappropriate interaction with a student. The day prior to his arrest, the teacher was accused of inappropriately touching a second, female student. This only serves to highlight the fact that many times there is more than one person who has been abused. Furthermore, the people who are abused often know their abuser personally. In addition, Sexual assault in preschools has also been reported in the past.
Parents and Loved Ones Should Remain Vigilant
Because the children who have been the targets of sexual assault often know their abusers, it is important for parents and friends to remain vigilant in areas where kids may spend a significant amount of time alone with another adult. For example, sexual abuse in foster care and youth sports leagues have also been reported. In addition to child abuse, sexual assault is also a serious issue, particularly in residential care facilities. Therefore, family members and friends should make sure that they understand the signs of sexual assault. Some individuals may become withdrawn or have a sudden aversion to attending an activity that they previously enjoyed. Some people may even suffer from PTSD. It is important for everyone to understand that the first step in stopping sexual abuse is speaking out and reporting allegations so that they can be investigated properly.
