Woodland Man Injured in Davis Accident
I’m Ed Smith, a Davis personal injury lawyer. A February 3 accident near Davis resulted in the hospitalization of one man when his vehicle collided with a car. The hospitalized man was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the collision and suffered injuries that were life-threatening. My sympathy and prayers are with the family and friends of the injured man with the hope that he will recover soon.
What Happened?
A representative of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the crash occurred shortly after 1:00 in the morning when the driver of a Toyota pickup attempted to pass an older Chevy sedan along Highway 113 southbound near CR 29. The pickup driver was identified as a Woodland resident, age 27. While attempting to pass, the truck collided with the Chevy’s front side. This caused the driver in the pickup to oversteer, losing control of the vehicle. It exited the road in a southwesterly direction striking a fence made of chain link, rolled repeatedly and finally stopped in the center of CR 29 upside-down.
Accident Injuries
As a result of the crash, the driver of the Toyota was thrown from his vehicle, suffering traumatic injuries. He was transported to a hospital in Vacaville for treatment. The Vacaville couple in the Chevy suffered injuries described as minor and did not require hospitalization.
Overcorrection in a Motor Vehicle
Overcorrection is a common cause of car accidents. It happens when a driver overreacts and jerks the wheel in the opposite direction, which unbalances the car. Realizing the mistake, the driver then quickly turns the steering wheel back in the other direction. As in the above accident, overcorrection may lead to a rollover and cause serious injuries or fatalities.
Some Causes of Overcorrection
Some car accidents of this type are caused by distracted driving such as texting or eating in the vehicle. This distraction of even a few seconds can lead to panic when the driver sees their vehicle drifting into another lane or that it’s about to strike another vehicle. Other accidents caused by overcorrection may be caused by speeding, swerving to avoid objects in the roadway, bad weather conditions or defects in the pavement such as potholes. Use the following tips to help avoid an accident caused by overcorrection.
- Stay calm.
- Keep hands at the 10:00 and 2:00 position on the wheel. When the hands are in this position, the type of knee-jerk reaction that causes overcorrection is more difficult to make.
- Take your foot off the accelerator, but don’t apply more than gentle pressure on the brakes.
- Don’t slam on the brakes. This can not only cause your vehicle to fishtail and you to lose control, but it can also cause vehicles behind you to strike your car.
- Look in the direction you want to go to steer back into your lane.
- Take a defensive driving course to learn how to handle vehicles in dangerous situations.
