Woodland Man Dies During Local Crash
On Sunday, February 2, 2020, a Woodland car crash left one person with fatal injuries. The Yolo County Sheriff’s Office has since identified the decedent as Edwin Ortiz Hernandez, a 33-year-old Woodland man. The Woodland Police Department (WPD) reported that the crash involved one car and left an additional person with injuries that left him in the hospital. Updates on the condition of the injured man have not been released.
Crash Information
The crash happened at about 12:30 a.m. on East Gum Avenue in the area of Bourne Drive. A WPD spokesperson reported that Hernandez had been a passenger in a GMC pickup driving east on East Gum. For unknown reasons, the pickup drove off-road and crashed into a sound wall surrounding a local trailer park. Police say that they are not sure how fast the vehicle was traveling.
An area resident who arrived at the crash scene almost immediately after it took place told officers that the crash caused the ground to tremble like a “small earthquake.” Multiple neighborhood residents reportedly left their homes in order to give aid to the vehicle occupants.
Response
Witnesses called WPD, who immediately dispatched responders to the site. When they arrived, officers discovered that both the driver and Hernandez had suffered serious injuries. Tragically, Hernandez was pronounced deceased at the collision scene. The driver was placed on an ambulance and rushed to an emergency room.
Investigation
East Gum Avenue was closed to traffic until 6:00 a.m. while response took place and officers investigated the crash site. WPD has stated that they currently have officers looking into what may have caused the crash. However, no suspected causes have been reported.
Single-vehicle accidents can happen for a number of reasons and are often caused by things that drivers don’t have any control over. These factors frequently include things like defective car parts such as brakes or accelerators, as well as hazardous roads with large potholes, missing signage, or other issues.
Wrongful Death Compensation
The effects of a fatal accident can be life-changing. Family and friends of the decedent often go through intense grief and can feel paralyzed or shocked by their emotions. Learning to cope with grief is very difficult, and it’s important to seek help from the people you love as well as from your local community. While focusing on emotional healing is important, it’s also vital to make sure that your family is financially stable during this time.
Unfortunately, losing a loved one can mean losing access to an important income source as well as critical services like home maintenance or childcare. The last thing that grieving families should have to worry about is paying their bills while they are mourning. In order to cover these losses, families can get help by working with a local attorney to file wrongful death claims.
