The CHP feels that injuries and fatalities can be greatly reduced or prevented by educating our youth. The California Highway Patrol’s ‘Start Smart’ educational program aims to eliminate high-risk driving behaviors in teenagers.

What is a Start Smart Driving Class?
The Start Smart educational program provides comprehensive traffic safety classes for teenagers and their parents. Updated by the CHP in 2014, Start Smart utilizes state-of-the-art techniques to capture the attention of parents and teenagers, offering a memorable experience. The classroom material includes information on crash statistics, behaviors common in teen drivers and their passengers, graduated California driver license laws, cultural differences in today’s society and the need for parents to be more involved in their teenage children’s driving experience.
What Topics Will Be Covered?
The class will go over collision avoidance skills, driver responsibility, crash trends, distracted driving statistics and laws, alcohol and drug related driving laws and the process for obtaining a provisional license. The class offers a chance for new drivers and their parents or legal guardians to ask questions of the Woodland Police and CHP personnel. The program and safety education class aims to attract new and soon to be licensed teenage drivers. Parents and legal guardians of the teenage drivers are asked to also attend the class.
When is the Start Smart – Woodland Teen Driving Class?
The class will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at Woodland Police Department located at 1000 Lincoln Avenue in Woodland, California.
How Do I Register?
Register in advance as space is limited. To register call (530) 662-4685. This class is designed for parents and guardians and their teenage drivers.
How Much Will The Class Cost?
There is no charge to attend the class. Funding has been provided by a grant from California Office of Traffic Safety by way of NHTSA.
