DUI Program in Yolo County
I’m Ed Smith, a Woodland auto accident attorney. Yolo County recently received $178,369 from the state Office of Traffic Safety to continue the Yolo County DUI program.
Yolo County DUI Program
The Yolo County DUI unit was founded in 2012. The program focuses its attention on law enforcement training, outreach, and the prosecution of those who are charged with a DUI in Yolo County. The goal of the program is to help prevent and reduce drug and alcohol-impaired traffic injuries and fatalities. Deputy district attorneys are assigned to the program and prosecute the most complex and serious DUI cases. The assigned attorney’s aide with these DUI cases through each step of the criminal process from the time of the original incident through sentencing.
What Does the Funding Allow?
The funding from the Office of Traffic Safety allows the team, who are specially trained in collision reconstruction, to help law enforcement in the investigation of major and fatal injury auto accidents. One of the goals of the key program is community outreach to prevent impaired drivers from getting behind the wheel.
Driving Under the Influence isn’t just Alcohol-Related
Many DUI cases are alcohol-related, yet Yolo County has seen a steady increase in DUIs that are drug-related. Many of the studied cases involved drivers who were impaired by the use of prescription drugs, marijuana, illegal street drugs or a combination of all three.
DUI/DWI
Driving under the influence and driving while intoxicated is the term for alcohol or drug-related driving behaviors. DUI and DWI accidents are responsible for almost 1/3 of auto accident deaths in the United States. Many of the drivers in these accidents are repeat offenders. DUI/DWI not only cause serious injury or death to themselves, but also to innocent passengers, pedestrians and other drivers. Any person who is responsible for an auto accident while driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is considered a negligent driver. If you’ve been injured by a drunk or drugged driver, contact an experienced auto accident attorney.
