Young Man Dies After Ventura Rollover Accident

A young man who was a member of the Explorer program at the Oxnard Police Department died at a local hospital yesterday following a three-vehicle crash in El Rio. This young man, whose life was lost at such a young age, was recognized as having great potential, and his loss is felt by the community and his family and friends.

What Happened

Emmanuel Mateo, a 20-year-old resident of Ventura, was driving north along North Rose Avenue and crossing the intersection at Central Avenue at about 10:20 a.m. on Monday, May 8, when his vehicle was struck by a pickup truck that was moving west along Central. The impact of the crash caused Mateo’s vehicle to roll, striking another vehicle. An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the accident, according to a California Highway Patrol officer.

Crash Victim

According to a representative of the CHP, the crash victim received head trauma that was serious in the accident. A coroner pronounced that the young man had passed away at about 5:30 the following afternoon.  A website has been set up to help with medical bills.

Oxnard Police Explorer Program

Post 9286 of the Oxnard Police Explorer Program, under the supervision of Sergeant Rocky Marquez, gives young people from 14 to 21 the chance to discover what a career in law enforcement is like. It works on important areas such as character building, patriotism, good citizenship and physical fitness. Mandatory meetings two times per month train youths in the program in geography, traffic stops, radio codes, searches of buildings, traffic control and in other areas of police work. Members also participate in local and departmental events like festivals, DUI checkpoints and fingerprinting of children.

Rollover Accidents

Rollover accidents are considered among the most dangerous. There are two types of rollover collisions: Tripped and untripped. Tripped accidents, such as what happened here, can be caused when a collision with another vehicle occurs, particularly with a side impact. This increases the horizontal force on the vehicle. The tires resist the movement, and the vehicle rotates and rolls over.

Rollover accidents are often fatal. However, serious injuries do occur. These include fractures, spine and neck injuries, blunt trauma and spinal cord injuries.
