Airbag Injury Reported in Collision at Comstock Drive Intersection

An accident in Yreka on July 20 between two vehicles resulted in one of the drivers potentially suffering an airbag injury. The collision happened at the intersection of Comstock Drive and East Oberlin Road around 12:44 p.m. A reporting person on a duplicate phone call to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said that a 37-year-old woman was suffering chest pain and had been struck in the face by the airbag when it deployed.

The female driver’s vehicle, a Toyota Rav4, was found 20 yards off the roadway. No additional information was provided. An investigation is underway by CHP traffic accident detectives to determine how the collision occurred and which driver was at fault in the injury accident.

How Defective Airbags Can Lead to an Injury

Airbags are safety components in cars that can help prevent serious injuries caused by accident-related collisions. However, when these airbags are defective or improperly installed, they can cause severe injury to the occupants of a car. Defective airbags may not deploy at all during an accident, leading to direct contact between the occupant and vehicle interior.

Even if the airbag does deploy, it may occur with too much force causing blunt trauma and other serious injuries. In some cases, faulty inflators have released metal fragments into the cabin, which could cause an airbag injury, such as a major laceration or puncture wound. In addition, many defective airbags do not properly restrain occupants within their seat due to inadequate padding or the size of the bag itself.

Types of Injuries That Can Occur Due to a Defective Airbag

Defective airbags can cause a variety of different injuries, depending on the severity of the car accident and the nature of the defect. Common examples of an airbag injury include:

  • Head trauma due to direct contact with a hard surface or blunt force trauma from an overly forceful deployment
  • Neck and back injuries due to improper restraint caused by inadequate size or padding of the airbag
  • Lacerations or puncture wounds caused by sharp metal fragments released from a defective inflator
  • Soft tissue damage due to blunt force trauma during an overly forceful deployment
  • Chest injuries due to the impact, which can range from heavy bruising to broken ribs and other types of trauma
