Major Injuries Suffered in Highway 20 Crash

In the early evening of Wednesday, November 10, 2021, a motorcyclist suffered major injuries in a hit-and-run crash that occurred on Highway 20 in Yuba City.

White Sedan Fled Scene of Incident

Officers with the Yuba-Sutter Area office of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) are investigating a suspected hit-and-run crash. They believe a white Chevy sedan caused a collision with a motorcycle and one other vehicle, and then fled the scene, according to a news release from the agency.

Further Details of the Crash

The collision occurred at approximately 6:00 p.m. A white sedan was reported to have been traveling east on Highway 20 in the number one lane near Gray Avenue. At the same time, a 36-year-old man from Yuba City was riding a 2021 KTM motorcycle in the same direction on Highway 20, within the number two lane. The motorcycle was to the right of the sedan and was traveling at approximately 35 miles per hour. The sedan was being driven at an as-yet-undetermined speed. In the number three eastbound lane of Highway 20 was a 2008 Chrysler minivan being driven by a 36-year-old female resident of Yuba City. The speed of the minivan was around 30 miles per hour and its position was behind and to the right of the motorcycle.

As the white sedan traveled through the Gray Avenue intersection, apparently, the driver did not see the motorcycle located to the right of his or her vehicle, and made an abrupt right turn, presumably in an attempt to enter the AM/PM located on the corner of Gray Avenue and Highway 20. The rider applied the bike’s brakes but was not able to avoid collision with the right side of the sedan as it turned in front of him. The white sedan continued its right turn while pushing the motorcycle into the path of the Chrysler minivan. The minivan driver did not have time to slow down before striking both the motorcycle and the sedan. At impact, the motorcycle was overturned onto the sidewalk, then slid into a tree, trapping the rider between the tree and the bike.

According to the Highway Patrol news release, the sedan driver then fled the scene.

Condition of the Involved Parties

The motorcyclist, who had been wearing a helmet, was transported by ambulance to U.C. Davis Medical Center with injuries described as major. The minivan driver also sustained injuries, although they were not severe. She had been wearing her seatbelt.

Suspect Vehicle in Highway 20 Crash

The CHP described the suspect vehicle as a white Chevy Cruze sedan. Officers estimated the model year as ranging from 2011 to 2016. The right side mirror will be missing and there potentially could be body damage to the right fender and front door.

Continuing Investigation

Investigators continue to work to identify the driver of the sedan who fled the scene of this injury accident. Fleeing the scene of an accident that caused injuries to another party or parties constitutes a felony hit-and-run. Anyone who has further information about the crash or can help to identify the driver of the sedan is asked to call the Yuba Area office of the CHP at (530) 674-5141.
