Yuba County School Bus Crash
The various reasons for needing public transportation for children to get to school are endless. Whatever the reason, all parents agree that their children deserve safe and responsible transportation. Furthermore, it is a parent’s nightmare to have their child involved in a school bus crash. Unfortunately, this situation came true for the parents of 14 children on Wednesday morning, May 10, 2017. A school but lost control and crashed, resulting in several young children being sent to the emergency room for observation.
What Happened?
In a rural section of Yuba County, near Marysville, a school bus crashed just before 9:30 AM while carrying 14 children, ages six to nine. According to the Marysville division of the California Highway Patrol, the bus was allegedly speeding down a hill which caused the bus driver to enter a tight curve too quickly. The driver lost control of the bus which then swerved off the road and came to a stop along an embankment. The accident occurred just blocks away from the school that was the children’s destination.

Preliminary Investigation
Officers from the CHP report that five out of the fourteen were transported to the hospital for potential injuries. However, the remainder of the children were able to get to school with transportation from the school’s principal. Thankfully, the bus was equipped with seatbelts that prevented more serious injuries. Normally, school bus drivers are familiar with their route because they travel it nearly every day. For this bus accident, the road was unfamiliar and not normally a route the school buses take. The driver was forced to take a detour from the normal route because of a fallen tree. CHP suspects that speeding is a determining factor in the bus crash.
Bus Accident Related Injuries
It is not uncommon for bus accidents to result in serious injury. This is due to a lack of seat belts, standing passengers, and passengers moving around at the time of the accident. In such cases, a femur fracture, forearm fracture, and spinal damage are not uncommon. There can even be delayed symptoms that can fail to present themselves until several days after the accident.
