Redding Police Department Awarded Grant for Traffic Safety

On the week of Thursday, October 8, 2020, the Redding Police Department (RPD) was awarded a traffic safety grant. The grant is reportedly worth a total of $285,000 and is intended to reduce the number of traffic-related injuries and fatalities on roads operated by the city. RPD reports that they will be using the money to conduct various programs over the coming federal fiscal year, indicating that the funding would run its full course by September 30, 2021.

Traffic Safety Programs

RPD provided a list of the various efforts that this grant will help fund. These included:

  • Increased patrols at key locations in order to apprehend alcohol and drug-impaired drivers as well as discourage DUI in general.
  • Education programs regarding California law on hands-free cell phone use as well as issues like traffic rights for pedestrians and bicyclists, common causes of collisions involving speeding, failing to yield, failure to stop, and improper lane changing and/or turning.
  • Collaboration with neighboring traffic agencies to address issues like speed, DUI, and driver distraction.
  • Recertification and training for officers in order to help them better identify intoxicated drivers. This will reportedly include multiple modules, including the Standard Field Sobriety Test and Drug Recognition Expert certifications.

Common Car Accident Factors in Redding

Research conducted using data from RPD and other area traffic authorities show that there were 4,486 traumatic vehicle accidents in the city of Redding between 2009 and 2020. The most common primary causal factors of these collisions are listed below from most to least common:

  • Speeding
  • Automobile right of way
  • Driving under the influence
  • Dangerous turns
  • Sign and signal violations

All other violations caused less than eight percent of collisions each. The above-listed accidents accounted for just over three-quarters of Redding accidents, and speeding alone caused more than thirty percent of the collisions in question. This means that speeding caused almost twice as many accidents as the next-most-common factor.

Crash Injuries

Collisions are dangerous, and people who survive car accidents are liable to be left with serious injuries. These injuries can have a big impact on your life, and recovering can take a long time. Often, the recovery process takes months or years and requires a lot of medical care. All of the necessary treatment for an accident injury can be expensive, and affording medical care is often difficult for people who’ve been injured because they have also suffered a loss of income. Altogether, these problems can leave people feeling as if they don’t know how they’ll be able to recover from their injury and move forward with their lives.

Calling a Lawyer

Thankfully, it’s possible for crash survivors to take action and seek compensation for their losses by filing personal injury claims. The payments available through these claims can cover a wide range of losses including not only medical bills and lost income, but damaged property, loss of quality of life, and more.
