Young Man Dies During Rural Highway 299 Crash
One person tragically lost his life after a Highway 299 crash that happened on Monday, January 18, 2021. According to California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident occurred at around 8:10 a.m. near Douglas City to the east of Redding. Police reports indicate that the accident was a multi-vehicle crash and, in addition to the decedent, left one other person injured. The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office identified the decedent as a 21-year-old man from Weaverville.
Crash Information
The collision occurred at around 8:10 a.m. on the westbound side of State Route 299. A 35-year-old Redding resident was driving a Ford pickup truck westbound on the highway when the vehicle entered a curve. At the same time, the decedent was driving a Chevrolet pickup eastbound on 299, approaching the same curve. For reasons that remain under investigation, the Ford drifted into eastbound lanes while driving through the curve and entered the direct path of the Chevrolet.
The two pickup trucks crashed into each other head-on, causing extreme damage to both. As a result of the impact, the Chevrolet was thrown off-course and eventually drove off-road. After leaving the road, the Chevrolet drove down a steep dirt embankment. The Ford reportedly came to a final stop blocking eastbound highway lanes.
Response
Emergency responders reaching the accident location found that the Chevrolet driver had suffered major trauma. Sadly, the individual lost his life on-scene. The Ford driver was reportedly discovered with minor injuries, and whether or not he received medical attention was not reported.
Investigation
CHP has reported that their officers are currently conducting investigations into what could have caused this crash. So far, police say that they do not suspect driving under the influence played a role, but that driver inattention could have been involved. Additionally, accidents like this one frequently involve non-driver causes like malfunctioning pickup truck parts or major pavement damage, and other highway issues.
Furthermore, investigating fatal accidents presents major challenges to police. Without being able to interview the decedent, officers may overlook evidence, leaving family members unable to hold at-fault parties financially accountable. For this reason, having a wrongful death lawyer conduct their own crash investigation is critical.
