Elderly Man Killed in Humboldt Motorcycle Collision
On Sunday, July 19, 2020, one person sadly passed away after being involved in a Humboldt motorcycle collision. The decedent has since been identified as 70-year-old Eureka resident Michael Tulley. California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicated that the crash happened in rural Humboldt on Highway 101 a few miles south of Eureka. Tulley was reportedly the only individual involved in this collision. Additionally, CHP is actively looking into what causal factors were involved.
Crash Details
CHP reports state that the accident occurred just before noon on northbound Highway 101 just past Jordan Road next to the Eel River. Preliminary investigations of the accident site suggest that Tulley was driving a motorcycle on the highway when, for unknown reasons, he lost control. As a result, Tulley was ejected from his vehicle and thrown to the ground. Further details about the events leading up to the crash have not been reported.
Response
Personnel from CHP and local response agencies arrived at the crash scene shortly after it was reported and discovered Tulley awake and alert. Medical responders determined that Tulley had suffered serious injuries and had him transported by ambulance to the St. Joseph Hospital to receive medical treatment. However, Tulley passed away from his injuries while in hospital custody.
Investigation
As CHP continues to investigate this terrible accident, officers have stated that they do not believe driver intoxication was a factor. Common motorcycle accident factors involve many causes outside of rider control. Non-rider factors in motorcycle accidents can include poorly designed roads, defective motorcycle products, faulty pavement, and more.
Fatal accidents with no surviving parties can be very hard for police to fully investigate. Because police cannot ask those involved in the accident about what happened, it’s possible that important evidence will not be uncovered during the investigation. To ensure that all liable parties can be held responsible, it’s very important to call a Eureka wrongful death attorney who can use their experience and resources to privately investigate the incident.
The Impact of a Deadly Accident
Fatal accidents can have a huge impact on families. Losing a loved one can cause an immense amount of emotional pain and stress. In many cases, people feel shocked and have a difficult time keeping up with their normal lives. Families should do everything that they can to give themselves the time and space that they need to process their grief. However, many people are unable to do so because of financial issues.
After deadly accidents, there are a number of financial problems that families can face. These include medical expenses for treatment given before their loved one passed, a lost source of income and/or valuable help around the house, funeral and burial costs, and more. While these issues can be very concerning, it is often possible to get help by working with an attorney to file a wrongful death claim. Learn more about wrongful death claims by watching this video:
