Two Truck Accidents Near Woodland, Multiple Injuries
Multiple people were injured following a series of truck accidents near Woodland. The two accidents occurred in the same location on Highway Interstate 5 around three hours apart and left multiple people with injuries that required hospital treatment. While updates on the health conditions of the injured parties haven’t been reported, medical officials indicated that none of the involved individuals suffered life-threatening injuries. Additionally, these accidents are under an active California Highway Patrol (CHP) investigation.
What Happened?
The initial accident occurred at around 2:30 a.m. on the southbound side of I-5 close to County Road 102. A semi-truck was traveling south on the highway when, for reasons that are unknown, it drifted to the right and eventually crashed into a guardrail. After striking the guardrail, the big-rig reportedly caught fire. However, the driver was able to exit the truck before the fire spread, and no injuries related to this initial accident were reported.
At around 5:30 a.m., while crews were still cleaning the scene of the first accident, a second collision occurred at the same location. The second crash reportedly involved another semi-truck as well as three passenger vehicles. Details about how the vehicles collided were not provided.
Response
Response officials at the scene of the second crash reportedly needed to extricate one of the survivors from the passenger side of a vehicle using special machinery. Altogether, five people involved in this accident were transported to area hospitals for treatment, while the injured sixth party refused treatment.
Investigation
As police investigate these accidents, CHP hasn’t indicated whether or not the cleanup scene of the first may have played a role in causing the second. Officers have stated that they do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a part of the initial crash. Furthermore, collisions are often caused by multiple factors, some of which may be outside of trucker/driver control.
