Bicyclist Dies After Yuba City Hit-and-Run Crash
On Wednesday, December 11, 2019, an elderly man lost his life in a Yuba City hit-and-run crash. The 77-year-old man has not yet been identified by authorities of the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office as his family is still being notified about the incident. According to California Highway Patrol (CHP), the man had been riding his bicycle in the early morning on the northern edge of the city when he was struck by a vehicle that immediately drove away from the scene. Police are still looking for the missing driver and vehicle.
Crash Details
The collision happened shortly before 4:00 a.m. on East Onstott Road just north of Pease Road near the Highway 99 junction. Emergency officials responding to the incident reported that the cyclist tragically lost his life at the collision location. His damaged bicycle was reportedly located nearby.
Specific details about how the accident took place are not currently available. However, police indicated that evidence found at the accident site indicated that the missing vehicle might be an early 1990s or late 1980s Chevrolet or GMC pickup truck or SUV. Police have also stated that the vehicle most likely has significant front end damage, including a broken right front headlight and running light.
Anybody who has information that could help police identify or locate the missing driver or vehicle has been asked to call Yuba-Sutter CHP to report what they know. Callers should use the non-emergency phone line (530) 674-5141.
Wrongful Death Damages
Losing a person you love is incredibly difficult. Many people feel totally overwhelmed by grief after hearing the news of a fatal crash. While it’s possible to learn how to cope with grief, it can take time, effort, and support from your loved ones and community. However, many people aren’t able to focus on these issues because their loss has affected them financially.
In order to have security after such a traumatic event, it’s important to reach out to a wrongful death lawyer who can handle your case for you and make sure you and your family are compensated for lost income, funeral and burial costs, medical bills, and other losses related to the accident.
Hit-and-Run Accidents and Liability
In most cases, fatal accidents are caused by a negligent driver. When this happens, the family members and dependents of the decedent are able to hold that negligent driver and/or their insurance company financially responsible for their losses. However, with a hit-and-run, people often worry about how they will be able to cover their damages when there is no driver to hold liable. In these cases, it’s often possible to claim payments through your own insurance company. To do this, you use what’s called “uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.” This is an optional part of insurance in California, and the amount of payment available varies for different policies.
