Recall on BMW 7 Series Door Latch

The German automobile manufacturer, BMW, has released a recall on its popular 7 Series vehicles. The main area of concern for this recall stems from the doors not fully latching. The recall affects approximately 45,484 vehicles on the roadway today.

Why?

BMW has issued a recall on some of their older model 7 Series vehicles due to a safety issue. The safety issue originates from the defective door latches of the car which may suddenly open in the event of an accident, leading to the increased rate of injury or even occupant ejection from the vehicle. The components of the car that are affected by the recall include the latches, linkages, and locks of the doors.

The vehicles affected by the recall are equipped with both the Soft Close Automatic and Comfort Access controls. The doors may appear to be latched and closed in these vehicles, however, they may accidentally open.

Which Vehicles?

The following vehicles are included in the door latch recall:

  • 2005 to 2008: 745i, 745Li, 750i, 750Li, 760i, 760Li and B7 Alpina vehicles

Recall Remedy

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) has not yet provided a remedy for this safety issue recall. Owners of these vehicles may contact the BMW line for customer service at (800) 525-7417 for more details.

Defective Vehicle Door Latches

When one purchases a new car, car door latches may not come to mind when inspecting the vehicle. Defective car door latches do not typically receive as much attention as they should. A door latch defect may cause the door of the vehicle to open and even eject the motorist or passenger from the car in the incident of a rollover collision or other crash. Although this vehicle component may not typically cause an accident, it may increase the risk of traumatic or fatal injuries in an automobile accident. The types of injuries from this defective vehicle part may vary from a traumatic brain injury, neck and spinal cord injury or even broken bones.
