Visiting the Spectacular Burney Falls

Burney may be a small town in Shasta County, but it has huge potential. One of its best features is the beautiful and enchanting waterfall known as Burney Falls.

If you like watching waterfalls, you will definitely enjoy taking in the breathtaking views of Burney Falls.

Where is Burney Falls?

Burney Falls is located inside McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. The waterfall is the centerpiece of over 900 scenic acres at the state park. The park is near Highway 89, an hour northeast of Redding and about a four-hour drive from Sacramento.

A fun fact about McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park: it is the second oldest park in California, and this year, it celebrates its 100th birthday.

Where Does the Water Come From?

The water flows from large underground springs above the fall associated with areas covered by lava flows. At 129 feet high, the waterfall provides a year-round steady flow rate of almost 100 million gallons a day. The massive water flows from the top of the rock face, but it also falls from the nearby volcanic rocks, giving an illusion of several waterfalls.

What Makes Burney Falls So Amazing?

The pool water is crystal clear, and you can actually see the bubbles of the falling water below the water surface. The waterfall has been referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World and was declared a National Natural Landmark in 1954.

When is the Best Time to Visit Burney Falls?

The amazing cascade of the waterfall has a steady flow throughout the year, making it a pleasant experience no matter what season you go.  However, the waterfall can get super packed in the summer months, weekends, and holidays. The best times to visit are in the spring and fall months, and particularly on a weekday to avoid the crowds. When the state park gets too crowded, it’s not unusual for park officials to close the entrance temporarily until the park empties a bit.

Staying Safe While Visiting Burney Falls

As a reminder, all visitors are encouraged to practice social distancing to help slow down the spread of COVID-19. Below are some guidelines for visiting MacArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park.

  • Maintain 6 Feet Apart – stay six feet or more away from other people who are not in your immediate household. Avoid congregating such as gatherings, picnics, and parties.
  • Wear a Mask or Face-Covering – the state requires all visitors to wear face-covering or masks in most indoor spaces and in public outdoor settings when you cannot maintain 6 feet from others who are not in your same household.
  • Stay Clean – Bring hand sanitizer or soap and make sure you pack all your trash out.
